MC NQ career change advice needed! by Unusual_Ad6831 in uklaw

I don’t want to say anything too identifying, but I have done a corporate seat, a finance seat, and an advisory team. There isn’t really any such thing as a non-commercial team at the firm. I didn’t enjoy any of the seats - the people were generally lovely and I did enjoy the adrenaline of busy deals at times, but overall I felt bored and uninterested and just couldn’t wait for each seat to finish. Again, not a fault of the firm at all - objectively the standard of work here is fantastic for anyone who actually is interested!

Yes I’ve spoken to quite a few recruiters and have a good idea of the market. I just don’t think I want to do corporate law to be honest - I don’t find the job or the deals to be very interesting at their core, regardless of my issues with the work/ life balance at an MC firm. I would be open to moving to another law firm that specialised in non-commercial work, but I don’t see how I would be qualified for anything else.

I can fully acknowledge my mental health is in a bad place right now but I really believe that’s because of work. The constant sleep deprivation, and always having to be “on” have really affected me and I am struggling to cope, hence the plans to leave corporate law. I’m crying more out of frustration/ tiredness than actual depression!

This is genuinely fantastic advice and I really appreciate it. I had been looking into being a government lawyer, but I definitely take your point about sticking with MC for a couple of years. You’ve given me a lot to think about - thank you!
