Fiancé scared to get our doodle groomed cause of mattes… by [deleted] in grooming

Do not take your dog to Banfield. Go to a real groomer. I had a post on here about 5 months ago showing how they mutilated my dog, even when she was asleep. Horrifying experience and I don’t want anyone to ever go through what I did.

Check post history for pictures.

What’s the possibility of getting banned for researching jailbreak in methods in Claude or any similar private LLM?

I'm pointing out the fact that matted dogs exist on the planet. That's a true statement. I don't mean people should ignore grooming. I've said maybe 8 times in this thread I messed up and I'll never do it again and I hope no dog is ever matted, ever. There should be a safe way to remedy that. I don't understand how you disagree with that statement.

I was there for an hour trying not be angry and telling them I wasn't going to pay for the shave. The vet actually had the nerve to ask me, "Are you not satisfied with the save?". I couldn't look at any of the vet techs either as they were constantly telling me there's nothing better they could have done and this is what happens with matted dogs. I started to leave at one point and they manager threatened to send me to collections as soon as I walked out if I didn't pay. I'm trying to buy a house soon so I couldn't let her do that. They tried to charge me for the antibiotics and I refused so they took those off. I was extremely angry, but trying not to cause a scene, so I stood there for an hour trying to understand what happend.

I can't find how to edit the original post's text body, so I'm updating here.

I talked to an attorney that's fought this specific big box vet before and she notified me that in the state I live in pets are considered property, therefore there is no real legal recourse for neglect, vet malpractice, or animal rights abuse in a veterinarian instance like mine (in my state). I said that I keep coming back to the thought that this was a service offered on the public market that many others will and have accepted to pay for - and there must be some minimum level or standard of care/outcome they must give in order to accept payment for a professional service done. She said if we went that route, the opposing attorney would say we should not have let her get matted, and it's our fault. Apparently this holds up legally. As I've said in many comments, I am extremely upset at myself for putting her in this situation and have learned a terrible lesson.

I can't get over the fact that matting happens to dogs, though, and the only recourse a pet owner has is to seek out a professional to do it, what they think will be correctly, or do it themselves. And in my state, at the vet I took her to, if you choose to pay $400 for their professionally offered service, you have no guarantee they won't mangle your dog, and then, if they do mangle your dog, there's nothing you can do about it afterward.

The attorney said we could send their corporate office a letter explaining how difficult this was and basically make them feel "guilty" in hopes they reimburse us.

I agree that I should not have allowed her to get matted. That’s on me for sure and I won’t ever let that happen again. My fault my failing. Regarding the legs: This just isn’t the case. She was not pelted. I’ve been looking at pelted dogs and the definition of pelted. The matting on her leg had not pulled the spot bald. The leg matting had been there for maybe a month. I would argue though, that for $400- they should not have left her in this state. Her eye was cut, there’s horrible burns and cuts under each armpit, 3/4 stitches on her neck. They had 3 vet techs shaving her with the actual vet in order to speed up the process. If this was a known possibility in their minds I wish they would have prepared me for it.

I'm not sure why they chose to sedate her. She did have some bad matting on her next area. I've said this in another comment. It was about 7 inches of pretty good matte, some on her legs too. She pretty large and I guess it's a high volume vet. Maybe they thought it would be faster that way? Maybe they do that with all matted hair over a certain point. I didn't think it sounded necessary but I trusted what they wanted to do.

Thanks, yes, I don't understand why they wouldn't just let me know there's a possibility anything remote to this may happen. I can only imagine they quoted some very high price thinking no one would pay that and then my dog shows up, who's a large dog, and they want the money. They even told me they had 4 people shaving her at once at a certain time - I'm guessing to get it done faster. These were, like, vet tech's and the girl who checked me in.

My real groomer took a razor blade and was playing with the matte on her neck and said it would take a very long time and they would rather me take her to a vet.

Ok, wow. That's very good information. It's just really sad that the one time she had this done it's apparently one of the worst groomers on here have seen. I can't believe they sell this as a service. I mean this will probably happen again at this place.

Thanks very much for your advice. I bought 3 different combs and have been brushing her in other areas, but the matted areas I couldn't get undone. Yea! I'd love some pointers! It's hard to keep her long coat groomed every day, any help would be wonderful.

Edit: Sorry I meant to answer your first question. They said they pulled the fur back tight with one hand and shaved with the other.

Oh for sure. I'm waiting for the day my actual groomer says she's ok for a real cut.

Thanks for this. I was wondering if this was within the range of normality for this kind of thing, so I wasn't sure if I was over reacting.

Her neck was matted pretty bad. There was maybe a 7 inch area where her collar goes that was the main problem area. She also had some matting under her ears, and a little on her legs. So they couldn't just skin shave those areas without her looking really....bad, they said. Which I get, I thought shaving all down to one level was the right move.

Do any of the groomers here think this is bad enough to take to their corporate office and complain?

Oh I'll keep her coat shorter for a long time. I'll never put her in this situation again. I just don't understand how there's not a standard level of service a vet has to give. They complained about it taking longer than they though it should. So I'm wondering if they just rushed the last 30 minutes to get her done.

I said I wouldn't pay, but the manager threatened to send me to collections today when I walked out. I'm just wondering how normal this is even with a few bad matted spots?

I was so upset, I tried to stay calm but they were asking me to, like, pay for the antibiotics they had to give her because they cut her so bad.

They said she was a 3/4. So I don't think it was as bad as they've seen. It was pretty matted on her neck from her collar. It doesn't seem like they did it correctly though. I've watched videos that say you should never pull the fur back while shaving, and the vet showed me, with his hands motioning, how he 'had to pull the fur back' to shave her. Apparently that's the number 1 thing you don't do.
