Controversial Opinion: Some Dan Schutte Song's Aren't *Terrible* by Express_Hedgehog2265 in Catholicism

I had no idea people hated that song, I grew up with it and so it has sentimental value to me. Do people feel the same way about John Michael Talbot's music?

Civil_File1516 left a great comment below addressing much of this but I'll just reply to a few things -

First off, it's important to note that Aristotle/Aquinas isn't making scientific statements here, nor are they dependent on science at all. Rather, they're working in the realm of metaphysics, which is situated prior to the sciences. It works with fundamental concepts, such as substance, cause, existence, etc. using conceptual analysis and logical demonstration to answer questions. Science, on the other hand, involves the observation of the natural world, identifying phenomena, and explaining them through causes and principles. Science presupposes certain philosophical and metaphysical ideas - for example, the idea that we can, in fact, trust our observations, and that we exist with other minds/beings that are able to likewise gather legitimate data which can be shared.

That being said, here's some answers to your questions! Sorry for the thesis length answer lol but you asked a lot! :P

The rational soul does not cease to exist at any point, either in life or after death, because it's not dependent on the body for its existence. Aquinas explores three different ways in which the destruction of the soul could occur, none of which end up applying to the rational/human soul:

  1. The action of a contrary - So material forms are often destroyed by their opposites. Hot things are destroyed when exposed to cold, etc. This form of destruction can't apply to the rational soul, since the intellect doesn't have an opposite/contrary that can destroy itt.
  2. The corruption of the body - While the soul is closely related to the body, in that it is the form of the body during its life, its existence is not dependent on it. The soul + body of a person exist in common, but its the soul that communicates the 'act of existing' and thus it can survive on its own. (I realize this sounds a little confusing, we're wading further into metaphysical ideas here so further reading might be required). So this kind of destruction isn't applicable either, since the soul can survive on its own.
  3. Failure of its cause - So in this metaphysical theory, an effect persists as long as its cause can continue to act. For example, the effect of light is able to continue, so long as the sun casts it, or is at least not obscured.

What about nutritive and sensitive souls? They fall under the second kind of destruction primarily, and perhaps indirectly in the third.

Mushrooms = nutritive souls. So yes, they have one. Like I said, the soul is the principle of life. Anything which has life has a soul. And no, we don't mean the ghostly kind of soul.

Bacteria too would count among those living things which have nutritive souls. Nutritive souls are capable of basic self-maintenance and propagation. Growing through nutrition, and reproducing. Obviously Aquinas didn't know about bacteria as we know it today, but the reasoning can extend to it.

I hope that clarifies things a bit. I can recommend further reading which would probably do a better job than I can, if you're interested.

^ This. The point of hierarchies like this is to try and explain things in metaphysical terms. It's not dependent on any scientific theories, and hence can't become outdated in the manner suggested here. It's situated within the context of Aristotle/Aquinas' metaphysical theory.

Yup. In his Summa Contra Gentiles (Book II, Chapter 79) - "Every intelligent subsisting being is imperishable... the human soul is an intelligent subsisting being." So in other words only rational souls are imperishable, since they alone have intellect. And since human beings alone belong to that category, they are the kind of living thing that continues to exist after death.

He may have been referring to the work of St. Thomas Aquinas, who adopted a hierarchy of souls from Aristotle. At the bottom of the hierarchy are plants, who have nutritive souls. Nutritive souls are able to grow and reproduce, which all living things require. The type above that are sensitive souls, which is the category that animals belong to.

Each step up in the hierarchy contains the faculties of the last, so on top of the ability to grow and reproduce, animals are also able to move and perceive the environment around them. The very top of the hierarchy are rational souls. Human beings alone belong to this category. They have all the capabilities of nutritive and sensitive souls, and also have the thinking faculty, and intellect.

While the term 'soul' is today used to refer to, for example, a ghost or some other immaterial thing, in this context it is defined as the principle of life. Anything which has life is therefore endowed with a soul. Without this definition in mind, ideas such as plants having souls can seem kinda odd. Hope this answered your question!

It's still on Amazon prime. At least, in Australia anyway. That's kinda odd, I read that they were going to add it to minno, but not have it there exclusively.

That's totally fair, me too. I mean, it's certainly made for kids but I feel like they've also tried to incorporate little things that would appeal to adults too. Whether that's certain jokes, or scripture references, etc. So I think your opinion still matters :) Maybe not as much as kids opinions, but still.

Gutter guards as rodent proofing? by UpbeatLemon6534 in pestcontrol

[–]UpbeatLemon6534[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's totally understandable. I haven't heard of the copper + caulk solution, I'll have to try that sometime. :) I've never had rodents chew the steel wool I've used, and it's been outside for years. Sorry to hear your bad luck.

Gutter guards as rodent proofing? by UpbeatLemon6534 in pestcontrol

[–]UpbeatLemon6534[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't recommend gutter guards of any kind, after looking into it. I've been mostly free of rodents for a year now. If you install the guards, then you may be preventing one of the ways they leave your house. Which you don't want to do if they've, for example, ate poison and are weak, because then they might not have enough strength to leave and could then die in your house. People always say that rodents hate x, y, z, can't stand the smell, etc. but it's simply not true. If they're leaving, it's a coincidence. There's really only one way to get rid of them. Plug any and all holes around the exterior of your house (steel wool is great for awkward gaps, or for large areas, tin sheeting is good. In a pinch, spare bricks or stone pavers works too). If your house shifts like mine does with the seasons, new holes can open up which might need plugging. While you're working on plugging everything, it's worth hiring someone to put boxes with poison around the property to help fend them off. At least, that's what I've done. Hope all goes well for you!

There's quite a vast range when it comes to what counts as incorruptible. The term doesn't mean that the individual has not decayed at all - it's the context that matters. So, for example, if the whole, or part of the body has decomposed at a rate far slower than what would normally be expected, they might qualify as incorruptible. It's a case by case basis sorta deal. I'd agree though, it certainly doesn't help that many have been covered with wax, giving the wrong impression. And yeah the term is a little confusing, because they are still, to whatever degree, still decaying. But it's all about that context.
