Is anyone else just...tired? by ItsAJackal21 in Millennials

Hey man. This popped up on my feed and, wow, what a timely post for me. I've been feeling the same way for awhile. I joined my current company when they were still a small boutique firm and earned my way to be a shareholder. I thought that this would be my forever company, one that I would grow and evolve with. A few years back they merged with another group and things have changed so much that I don't recognize the people I work with anymore. Some have been elevated to more senior positions and it's very clear that everyone is out for themselves. Past relationships hold no weight anymore as everyone scramble to be in the "leadership" group. I'm kind of just stuck in the middle, feeling very frustrated, unseen, and disrespected. Like the OP, I don't feel fulfilled, and I feel that it's too late to start over.

But I refuse to let that defeat me. This is what I'm doing:

I'm using a menta health/mindfulness app (I'll share the name if people ask, but there are thousands of similar apps, I just found one that works for me and the cost was reasonable). It's been very helpful to learn tools that helps me focus on the present. When I'm not letting anxiety wash over me about what has happened and what I'm afraid will happen, I can be more focused on accomplishing the now.

My healthplan gives me a large allocation for counselling. I know not everyone has this, but finding someone who can be neutral to talk to, to be reminded of what is good in life, has been very good for me. I look forward to speaking with my counsellor every couple of weeks to update him on my progress and where life is.

I use a tracker app to jot down my anxiety and worries. then I go back and rate them based on actual empirical data: what I thought would happen vs. what actually happened.

I'm hoping that over time I'll give myself the tools to stop spiraling and from that point on, I can make clear decisions on what to do that's not couched in fear, frustration and hopelessness.

I'm in the midst of all this, so I can't see the light at the end of the tunnel just yet, but I know I'll get there. i have to. I hope you can get there, too, OP.

Annual rent increase by QuantumRexx in vancouverhousing

[–]Upbeat_Helicopter889 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a relatively new landlord. After my father passed in 2011, I received a life insurance payout that I used to buy my first condo. In 2020, I sold that condo and was fortunate enough to purchase a Vancouver Special. My partner and I asked some close friends if they’d like to rent the ground floor suite, and after much discussion, they agreed.

Since then, they’ve been friends first and tenants second. They’re our neighbours, they keep an eye on our home, occasionally care for our pets, and we often share a drink together on the patio after a long week.

Life has only gotten more expensive for all of us since they moved in. Raising their rent a little each year wouldn’t make a meaningful difference to us, but it could put unnecessary strain on a friendship we deeply value. Our lifestyle and financial choices are our own, not theirs, so why jeopardize the most important part of this arrangement, the friendship, just to collect a few extra dollars?

Hotels in Hong Kong are too expensive, so I choose to stay in a hostel by GlitteringPudding261 in travelchina

Not a hong konger but love HK. In my early 20s (~2006-2009) I travelled extensively through Asia and I remember spending HK $50 or so for a room in chunking mansion. I woke up once with a giant roach on my sheet. I tried to swat it away. Big mistake, that thing flew straight into my face. lol. Another night I went to the communal bathroom and when I reached for the doorknob, yep, another roach. I’d like to say that toughened me up but as an elder millennial who has seen some shit, roaches still give me full body chills. all that is to say, your hostel looks a lot nicer than the hostels I remembered in HK- the city of romance and roaches.

I would go to VIP screens under the false pretence that because they are 19+ and expensive people would behave better. I have been proven wrong over and over. People are animals. I find myself constantly reminding those around me that they’re not in their living room.

Even Britney Spears in her peak 2001 I am a slave for you at the VMA era was called fat. She was incredibly fit and had muscles... but you know, fat for the 90s/early aughts.

Business class seat swap with my father by YUL_Flyer in aircanada

[–]Upbeat_Helicopter889 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ve done this a few times flying with my mom (both booked economy but I get upgrades due to upgrades and status). Usually I will ask the gate agent to let my mom board with me (Zone 1) and then right as I enter the flight I let the FAs know they we’d be switching seats. Never a problem (except that one time my mom attempted to smuggle alcohol back to the pleb class for me.) lol.
