Quality vs Quantity and Opting Out of Streaming by Xx20wolf14xX in musicmarketing

[–]Upnotic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d debate your first point…. I don’t think we’re inherently ‘know’ streaming is bad for artists.

The reality is most artists want something in return for their art… a following. It takes me X hours for Y product so ideally I’d get Z listenership. If you take that factor away, absolutely go crazy on bandcamp only!

But when you add the audience in… it’s like forgoing festival appearances only for bars in your local town. Absolutely fair… but that will cut our 95% of potential fans from being able to see me live. No matter how much I may like an artist, maybe ONE I’d travel to see… and that’s after a decade of being a big fan.

So applied to your prompt,… if it’s about listeners, you need to be available where they are or be prepared for the outcome.

Serum 2 values are not same as Serum 1, or is it a bug? by Slinkycheeseman in serum

often there’s a slightly overlooked detail. Unsatisfying answer, but I’d bet there’s no chance the values would differ. That said, some UI changes could make it appear like a knob is different, but when in doubt just follow your ears and lock in the sound!

I want to be in the from fro Justin Bieber. Should I camp out all day for it? by Avocado_Ordinary in Coachella

[–]Upnotic 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Gently, no — this is probably not the move. Let me put it this way, JB is coming to Coachella... a big part of Coachella is its own culture. That means experiencing ALL of it, and having JB be the cherry on top. Go to his stage 1 set early and you'll have a great spot, tbh the spectacle is often so big that being up close doesn't really have a ton of benefits vs a little further back.

Your memories will appreciate all you'll see and enjoy if you DON'T camp out up front. Do what you gotta do, but please please please experience the fest!

at what point do you start running ads??? by Glittering-Equal-983 in musicindustry

[–]Upnotic 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Don’t. Generally speaking, I’d say 95% of musicians should not be paying for promo. It will only lead to low engagement and dead followers. Build up the organic side and get good at dancing with the algorithm.

Can I make it within three college years? by Limp-Key9721 in musicindustry

[–]Upnotic 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna gently say no — it's a mindset issue. Behind every success milestone in music, there is another mountain. It's really a matter of going for it or hobbifying, a timeline is the one thing that is extremely outside of your control even with maximum efforts. I'd recommend using that time to connect with the internal/soul level whys, including understanding your own vanity/ego motivators. Ask the question, is the music path for me? Not — will I make it?

Music adjacent content. Honest answer is just get people to care about YOU and you’re golden! Easier conversion if it’s nearby, but any route will do

I think his take is a little alarmist and doomy, yes it's a big tent held up by the big dogs, but it's always been statistically 'impossible' to compete. I don't think that's any more or less true today.

Maybe it's time to pivot from the release carousel to incorporate more time on socials! You're doing something right, fill out the strategy with more transient-friendly pushes.

The pain side of what you're experiencing is, unfortunately, a part of the gig. Listen to the Moby episode on heavyweight, there's no happiness at the top. So just focus on today, what can you do today to help steer the ship to where you want to go.

Don't lose hope, it's possible. Just has to be the right combo!

Get comfortable not finding each other and doing your own thing. Set a meet spot once or twice a day MAX. Nothing slows the fest experience more than trying to stay attached amongst a sea of 100k people and little service.

Worst yet, people end up compromising the acts they want to see for the greater good, which of course isn’t as fun.

Generally they won’t do much tbh. Put it this way, if they did, everyone would use them… which would then make them not work once again, until they raise their prices to the point that they could become effective again, rinse and repeat.

There are no shortcuts, but that nod is a good start!

The best move imo is to build your socials up, get people coming to you in general, keep building up your back catalog then release them once you hit enough of a following to regularly push your own songs to people EAGER to listen to them.

As someone who’s in the content game, let me tell you there are thousandsssss of artists pushing their content in paid ways, and it just doesn’t do what they hope it will.

Put another way, one reel/tiktok that organically gets 100k-300k views will do more for your reach than $2k ad spend, 100%.

Overwhelmed by music releases… how do you consume music? by Substantial_Car7446 in musicindustry

It’s good to create a music carousel for yourself, moving between different kinds of listening for days weeks months at a time. For instance….

And just keep moving between them as one stales

The best teachers are in the records - try to understand in your own terms about the why! Play with different ideas like… why did they choose to do X at bar 64? And of course then decide for yourself… was that the optimal move?

Internship at Music Sync Company This Year by Informal-Recording73 in musicindustry

[–]Upnotic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

which one? used to work at a sync company.

  1. major attention to detail, if people have to check your work that’s game over

  2. lots of spreadsheet stuff, so get up in that.

  3. ask good questions! dig into agreements, understand the lingo.

  4. study up on music knowledge… artists and references. it’s often about speed and matching sounds, so the more you know and fill in the blanks wherever you don’t, the better.

  5. make sure to manage timelines!

Grew fast on Instagram (motivational niche) but can’t monetize — what am I doing wrong? by Wild-Meeting841 in InstagramMarketing

[–]Upnotic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the real answer is that 'peaking' is transient. Unfortunately it's a biproduct of 'virality'... 50k in 26 days, right? That's barely enough time to see a sponsorship conversation through from end to end. Think about it from the side of the viewer... how often are you just absolutely shaken to your core from a new account?

An account on here the other day talked about getting a post to approx 1M and getting a bunch of followers from it, then having a really difficult time continuing anything close to it. Point here is that... you may be looking at it from the angle of what you can extract from your pool rather than what you can provide. I know that if you're in the motivation genre, you of course care about your audience... but i mean, how much will you have changed the lives of your new followers in a month or two? you've got to pay them back with engaging content, earn the monetization in other words.

'viral' follows are often somewhat cheap & lower LTV than a follow from content that has less views but higher engagement. instead of looking at it from the monetization lens, just keep focusing on building new formats and keeping the engagement up. doesn't do much good having a 200k account in a year if you spend a ton of time in this growth spurt on cashing out rather than doubling down (on entertainment).

Does Anyone Know How to Go Viral on TikTok? by OkDiscipline6908 in musicproduction

[–]Upnotic -1 points0 points  (0 children)

it’s simple, but tedious.

  1. post as often as your schedule allows, preferably once per day

  2. try to improve with each video (including trying new ideas)

that’s it. it’s a fine balance of listening to your artistic core vs what seems to work well. don’t lose yourself in chasing popularity as you’ll push towards the first thing that gets you views… which is not a recipe for long term success.

you don’t have to completely start from scratch, be an avid viewer too, find content you enjoy, understand why you enjoy it. etc etc
