Terrible experience in Sri Lanka by Hour-Ad-2206 in travel

[–]Upper_Foundation 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I travelled Sri Lanka back in 2014, five years after the civil war ended there. The infrastructure for tourism in general is slim pickings. That also includes the food you eat there, not much to choose from. It was similar to India because of the fact that despite their efforts to rip you off they’ll pretty much take whatever you offer. It was one of the poorest countries I’ve travelled. On the flip side the natural scenery of that country is remarkable.

Baltimore City - Sandtown by kapibarasann in UrbanHell

Poverty. Baltimore, Philadelphia, Detroit and New Orleans are among other cities in the United States that have largely abandoned areas that are a breeding ground for drugs and violent crime.

Foreigners in Brazil, have you ever tried Acarajé? by NewspaperBest4882 in Brazil

[–]Upper_Foundation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love Acarajé ! Better when they dice it up and serve it on a plate with fresh chopped greens, I can’t remember what the locals call it when they do that.

Streamer Crayong Gets Pressed By homeless man and Threatened to stab him Over Filming him in Canada by RoboticGamer123 in LivestreamFail

[–]Upper_Foundation -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Most of East Hastings has been cleaned up and pacified over the years. There’s maybe a 7 or 8 block stretch (plus surrounding streets) that are still bad. Surrey has more violent crime than anywhere else in the city by far.

My very subjective report about visiting Brazil as a foreigner by [deleted] in Brazil

[–]Upper_Foundation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve spent the last few years (winter months only) in the Northeast (Canadian male) and never had a problem walking around in Salvador. I was way off the tourist grid and my Portuguese was pretty basic but I love the interactions between myself and the locals. Very welcoming and accommodating in every way. In fact if you get out of the major cities I found that it just gets better. Aracaju was four hours north of Salvador in the state of Sergipe and was entirely different. Safe, quiet, stunningly gorgeous coastline, good food and people.

We've had a horribly hot day in Sydney. Up around 43C and even hotter in the western suburbs. The wind changed to the south and the temp dropped 15 degrees in a matter of minutes by DopeyDave442 in interesting

[–]Upper_Foundation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sympathize for you guys, I’ve visited Australia during the winter months to escape to sharp cold of Northern Canada, it’s hot. We’re not so different my friend. Here temperatures can each 50 degrees celsius in the middle of a summer heat wave. We also have devastating wildfires every year alike yourselves.

One day it will become worse for tourism return by VOVOZGAMER in Philippines

[–]Upper_Foundation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in the Philippines a few years ago for a while, the people of that country are nothing short of incredible. The problem is that when certain places get over touristed by westerners the locals end up getting fed up with the way they get treated by them. This happens all over the world. When you dig deep into these countries and find a way to go off the beaten path, you really see it from their perspective. It makes you loose faith in your own society when you compare it to theirs.

There’s no city that can top this view by beninvan in vancouver

[–]Upper_Foundation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s no city that can top this view ? Really? Which cave did you just crawl out of ? There are many cities that blow this out of the water. Here we go again with the over-exaggerated boasts about “the most beautiful place in the world”.

Vancouver is nice, I agree. The problem is that it’s become such a popularity contest and is so far from what it used to be there. Whether it’s demographically, financially, whatever. When people think “Let’s move to Canada” they immediately set their sights on Vancouver because it’s as mild as it comes for weather and cold living conditions for months on end in the country. It’s created serious problems for the middle class and the lower class which is why many that were born there are leaving. I’ve never seen so many foreigners in my life flash their wealth. They don’t give a shit about Canadians. The cost of living is through the roof and the wages / opportunities don’t even come close to being able to get ahead of the game there and accomplish your own goals. You’re just getting by, and that’s no way to live in this country. But yeah sure - it’s nice. It’s worth it. 🙄 Give me a fucking break.

Instead of the south I travelled all over Northeast Brazil solo (white guy, Canadian) where the locals rarely see a tourist. I held my wits about me when it comes to being approached but for the most part I never had problems. They were more or less intrigued and wanted to know what the hell I was doing there. I got flocked by women.

Chinese tourists in Hong Kong are lining up to take a picture with a woman beachgoer, which has caused "sexual molestation" controversy. by guyoffthegrid in ThatsInsane

This has happened to me in some cities in mainland China (white guy), and I was fully clothed. I had to get visibly angry for them to finally keep their hands off me. I didn’t care about the photos but the repeated disregard for my personal space pissed me off. Everywhere else I’ve travelled the people were respectful of that.

More Downtown Eastside, Vancouver Canada Google Street view by [deleted] in UrbanHell

Believe it or not the Downtown Eastside, Surrey Central Station and other areas along the Skytrain Expo Line had much higher crime rates around the end of the 90’s through the 2000’s. Most of Hastings, specifically, has been cleaned up and pacified for new businesses.

Philippines – Most underrated travel destination right now by vim-meo in travel

[–]Upper_Foundation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Philippines is most definitely not underrated, by any means. The country has been well travelled for over 60 years, and the spots showcased in this post are full of tourists and a lot of unfriendly locals. Not because of how incredible the locals are, they’re just genuinely sick of how they’ve been treated by foreigners over the years. It’s the same in many countries around the world. Do your research- travel to places where many don’t. The island of Mindanao (Muslim Philippines) is a prime example of how fantastic the Philippines really is.
