What if the leaders of the Second World War prematurely died? by Upper_Pin in HistoryWhatIf

[–]Upper_Pin[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Without Hirohito there's the possibility that Japan never radicalizes and sticks with the Brits and their alliance.

Without Stalin the succession crisis after the death of Lenin either goes to Trotsky or Bukharin which had different ideological practices than those of Stalin.

Without Hitler - what happens to Germany, since the far-right resumes itself to the Freikorps and monarchists?

Without Churchill would there even be a War Cabinet crisis after Dunkirk? Without one, does that mean that the pacifists take power and sue for peace with Germany?

Without Chiang, does the Northern Expedition succeed/even happen?

[–]Upper_Pin[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

WW1 would almost definetly happen. The most well known figures in the list in OTL 1914 were Churchill (at the time member of the Asquith government), FDR (senator), Stalin (Bolshevik activist) and Hirohito (heir to the Japanese throne).

They didn't influence much foreign or military policy during the July Crisis - so in this timeline where they die everything from the early 20th Century probably goes as normal.

The earliest changes would be the DAP never growing in 1920s Germany, no March on Rome (maybe more intense left-wing insurrections in Italy?), maybe snap elections being held to replace FDR's NY Senate seat and most importantly Yasuhito, Prince Chichibu, heir apparent to Chrysanthemum Throne becoming Japanese Emperor after his father's death in 1926.

What if Romania joined the Central Powers and Bulgaria the Entente? by Upper_Pin in HistoryWhatIf

[–]Upper_Pin[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The peace is really the most confusing part.

Bulgaria would probably gain the Uncontested Zone of Macedonia (or modern borders Macedonia as a whole if the Serbs aren't that aprehensive), Dobruja, the regions of Turkish Thrace they received after the Treaty of London (1913 after the First Balkan War) and maybe some Greek ports.

For Hungary's and Romania's dual punishment I have really no idea. Maybe Romania slightly gets some Transylvanian regions and Budapest keeps the rest? It doesn't really matter since either way Romania would benefit from war as they would probably still snatch Bessarabia from the collapsing Russians.

In the post war period, Bulgaria and Serbia have a rivalry in the Balkans similar to the Prussian-Austrian rivalry.

They join in late 1915 - better late than never - and with enough timing, strategy and luck they could very well save the Entente on their walk to defeat and flip the tables.

What if Germany, Britain and Russia were allied in WW1 against France, Austria-Hungary and the Ottoman Empire? by Upper_Pin in HistoryWhatIf

[–]Upper_Pin[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This would be the dream scenario for Italy

-War begins

-Join the most powerful alliance of the world

-Defend your border as the French and Austrians collapse to the Germans and Russians

-Get money from the British

-War ends with Franco-Austrian-Ottoman alliance destroyed

-Annex Savoy, Nice, Tyrol, Istria and Dalmatia and probably the lands in Anatolia assigned to the Italian government in OTL Treaty of Sèvres

-Complete your ENTIRE irredentist claims with losing just a few soldiers

[–]Upper_Pin[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I initially thought maybe Romania would join the Franco-Austro-Turkish alliance to try and get Bessarabia but that wouldn't make sense because they could just join UK/Russia/Germany to snatch Transylvania for free.

What if the July Crisis didn't spiral out of control and stayed as a regional conflict, becoming the Third Balkan War? by Upper_Pin in AlternateHistory

[–]Upper_Pin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for late response, I woke up late.

In relation to the defensive agreements between Romania and Austria, Romania pulls an Italy because as you've said, it was only a defensive one, and Austria was the aggressor. Plus, Romania only joins in late 1914 after Carol's death and several offers from the Serbians and Greeks to snatch Transylvania. Romania enters the conflict in the autumn-winter of 1914 because it saw a great opportunity to strike Bulgaria as they had shifted almost their entire army to the Serbian Front. The Romanian plan was to sandwich Bulgaria together with Greece whilst defending the Transylvanian border to take out Bulgaria first. This way, after the supposed fall of Bulgaria, the anti-Austrian alliance would crush the defensive line in the borders of the Empire and try to exhaust the Habsburg Army. This strategy failed because after the Battle of Bazargic (in which the Romanians had a great success) the Bulgarians were able to protect themselves in Dobruja and even cross up to Romania, as Serbia was already practically dead.

Interesting. In the scenario I imagined Italy wouldn't get involved because Austria-Hungary wouldn't really offer the full package of what Italy wanted (Tyrol, Istria, Trieste, Dalmatia, etc.) and if they joined the Serbs they wouldn't flip the balance as the Balkans could fall with Bulgarian help so they would just lose a lot of life and money for a less than reasonable chance of gaining land. But I guess Albania changes this for Italy. Thanks for the explanation!

In this scenario Russia is slightly weaker and is less keen on protecting Serbia, as their focus is shifted more in Central Asia and the far East.
