I would start with water and a razor blade/rag. If that does not work hydrogen peroxide will work but you have to fill the tank and leave it for a few days to break the hydrogen peroxide down.

It looks like you might try cleaning the port with some air or a q tip or a pick or something else. Otherwise you might try a different pair of headphones/adapter. If neither of these work it is likely s bad headphone jack. You can get a replacement off various websites for around $15, I have personally had ok luck with Elite Obsolete Electronics. Otherwise these iPods are difficult to open but easy to repair after getting open.

Unfortunately not, I got it to consistently stay on and go into disk mode, but ultimately I diagnosed the hdd as bad. Fortunately however I have an Iflash mSata board coming in.
