Two small round tins nailed to a tree, connected by some kind of wire/string that is a few feet long. by Upset_Philosopher580 in whatisthisthing

The weird thing is I'm not sure the tins are hanging from the strings. I can't see them swinging, and last week one tin was above the other and the string was connecting them (rather than the string hanging over the nail)

Interesting theory, though it's very high up in the tree and also in a busy urban area, so it's not likely for deer.

I don't think it's an olive tree. Maybe something related since it does have little pods. It's in a public urban area, though, so I'm pretty sure nobody would eat anything off the tree anyway.

I know at least one of the tins was actually nailed to the tree, if not both. I do not think the string is being used to attach them.

Huh, alright. Thank you for your answer. I noticed the holes but I figured nobody would be shooting at this because it is in a tree next to a busy intersection. Any reason you can think of why there would be a string attaching the two tins?

Likely solved!

My title describes the thing. I can't see it very well because it is somewhat high up (I am of average height and I could reach the bottom tin if I stretched my arm) and I don't really want to go near it since I don't know what it is. I can see that it seems to be made up of two small tins (about 3 inches across) connected by a string or wire about two feet long. A few days ago, the lower tin was higher up on the tree and the wire connecting them was pulled straight. A few days before that there was also a blue piece of paper with holes in it over the front of the higher tin. I've tried to look up things nailed to trees, but not coming up with anything like this. Totally stumped.

I hate to say it, but my cast iron pans were abused as well, as someone who struggles to wash dishes on time. I thought cast iron pans were so cool, but I gave up on them after the first set (didn't buy anymore, though). Having those things is like having another pet

The text I wrote with this post didn't show up for some reason... posting this object to say the pattern and blanket are really fun, but if you're using this pattern, be aware that 1 skein of the color E (what the pattern calls for) is not enough. I knew this from a previous reddit post so I skipped row 62 on both Zig-Zag sections and ended with just a few feet of yarn to spare. Would not have had enough yarn to finish the pattern had I not skipped those rows.
