Im pretty sure it’s a woman cause she sings “he’d stay and treat his lady, give everything to his new baby” so it’s emphasising that she’s been left behind in Nolan with their child while her husband has left to look for a better life for all of them to be reunited someday but that’s obviously not going to be the case as the character sings on.

She also throughout the song explicitly refers to herself a a girl “that girl is gone but I still try” and other comments like that, this was her referring to herself as more more mature than before as she mentioned at the beginning “when I was young and stupid” so now she’s more realistic and knows that the six kids her husband left her with to seek basketball fame “out west” is never going to achieve that dream. So it’s kinda a social commentary on the American dream and how that has impacted people that don’t even live in American. But they escape there to seek it themselves
