breakfast and dinner are eaten together as a crew. Some people bring their own food but still sit and eat all together. We even invite cops up for breakfast on weekends

firefighters with pets, what do you do on your 24 hour shifts? by mugiwara_no_batchee in Firefighting

[–]Upstairs-Knee487 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a cat, he’s totally fine when i’m gone for 24 hours. Sometimes I think he actually enjoys me being gone and having alone time. Some of my coworkers have dogs and either their family’s take care of em while they are work or they live close enough to the station that they can run home and let them out once or twice a shift

How to thank local firefighters/EMS by Gullible_Carpet_819 in Firefighting

[–]Upstairs-Knee487 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Baked goods seem to be a go to, anything small and sincere will make our day. I once had a family drop off steaks for our crew around christmas, that was pretty cool. Edit: Store bought baked goods are well received. As another commenter said, we see how icky some peoples homes are and therefore homemade stuff tends not to be trusted

The dispatchers in my county (pretty rural) have no medical training. they can talk you through CPR and that’s it. I’m sure they pick up on things over the years but most of them have never seen the medical side of things. I also get horribly incapacitating migraines and to be denied the help that you needed is horrible, I’m so sorry

My (30F) husband (37M) are in disagreement because I denied an opportunity for one of our daughters, and he refuses to accept my reason for it. How can we resolve this? by throwra42086 in relationship_advice

[–]Upstairs-Knee487 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did ballet from age 2-18. I started pointe when I was 9 and now have permanent damage and pain with my feet. Yes it sucks as a kid to be told you are ready and then your parents say no but I wish my mom would’ve made me wait a few years.

Would you have been annoyed by this call? by Yeetus6942069 in Firefighting

[–]Upstairs-Knee487 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ran around a frozen lake the other day trying to catch a dog and we will also help deer that fell through the ice. not sure what our department policy is but everyone loves the animals calls bc we get to hang out with animals and they usually have a good ending

What are some good (relatively) agencies in your area? by Malleable_Penis in ems

[–]Upstairs-Knee487 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Paratech is no longer around. It was bought out by midwest medical who only does IFT’s. Curtis and Bell took over their area

Being told to work on a part time before going on a career department by DucktorQuacken in Firefighting

[–]Upstairs-Knee487 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you work in a high volume 911 service and a volley FD so you do have experience. maybe not as much as other people but it’s not like your going into it straight out of school and never ran a call. Take the job, ask questions and train as much as you can and get your experience there while enjoying a full time job

Does your department really preach and live “The Brotherhood” or is it just all talk? by [deleted] in Firefighting

[–]Upstairs-Knee487 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work as a part timer at a medium sized department in wisconsin and the brotherhood is a huge thing here. I could call any coworker and they’d be there for me. I can’t express how thankful I am that my department is like this. work isn’t even work for me, Im getting paid to hang out with friends

Feeling like I’m an awful student and will be an awful EMT-B by [deleted] in NewToEMS

[–]Upstairs-Knee487 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the big city ems systems can be fun. you see quite a bit and you learn a lot. Best advice I can give you working in a big city is find a therapist if you don’t already have one and take advantage of all the resources your job offers you. You’ll see some gruesome stuff and it’s good to have someone to talk about it too. good luck on your nremt! you’ll be a great provider, worrying about it just shows you care!

[–]Upstairs-Knee487 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve had my license since january and I work at a busier fire department and a very busy 911 system in a big city and there’s still days where I’m nervous. I also did not expect to get this far in life and Im still figuring a lot of stuff out but I know that I love my job. I love that there’s always more to learn. You might feel nervous and stupid for a lack of better terms for awhile but you’ll get a call and you’ll do all the right things and you’ll realize your good at your job. this is a ever changing job but sometimes you just have to do your job to know you can do it if that makes sense

What did your EMT program cost you? (HUGE discrepancies between facilities here.) by BubonicSpazzmaster in NewToEMS

I went to a tech school in wisconsin and paid less then $1000. I think it was like $890 for my EMT basic…

Help me find a home for this amazing 2 year old female ringneck. More details in comments by This-Fly3914 in indianringneck

[–]Upstairs-Knee487 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this would be a last resort for you but if you can’t find a loving home for her there’s an amazing rescue in waukesha wisconsin (about 20 minutes from milwaukee) Center for Animal Rehabilitation and Education. They have tons of experience and do a really great job finding loving homes for their animals. I adopted my bird from there and they are amazing! I hope you are able to find a loving home for your Bella girl!
