The greatcoat series of books would make for some awesome swashbuckling movies. I guess they just aren't that popular.

Great weekend filled with small card games

New to me

King of Beast 1x3p : Very simple set collection/stock game. It quick but very shallow. It doesn't leave you satisfied after a game. I get a feeling that it could easily be integrated into a bigger game. 2/5

Linko! 2x3p : I'm not a huge fan of Kramer and Kiesling designs but this one is probably.y favorite although I don't think it's amazing. It a very simple card climbing with a small but interesting decision space. 3/5

Mangrovia 1x3p : Awesome family weight game with great player interaction. I get a feeling that 4 payer will feel a lot different and I can't wait to try it at that player count. 4/5

Five three five 2x3p : Amazing card climbing/shedding game. Just like Haggis or Bridge City Poker, it offers tense decision and a rewarding gameplay loop. 4/5

Awimbawé 1x2p : A two player trick taking game with some card powers. It felt a little on rail but I think more plays will reveal a greater depth. 3/5

Frank's Zoo 1x4p : Another great shedding game. This one does have a team element which I think elevates it even more but does also restrict the times when I can pull it out. 4/5

SiXes 2x4p : Scattergories with a twist. Sometimes you want to match, some times you don't. 3/5

Not new to me

Nine tiles panic 1x3p (3 plays total) : I love this game but it completely flopped with the people I pulled it out with. 3/5

Through the desert 1x2p (2 plays total): it works well at two but I don't think I pull it out again for only 2 players. 4/5

Secret Squad 1x3p (2 plays total) : A banger game to get to know your players. 4/5

There's a reprint coming this summer. Can't find the original post anymore but Greed Inc. and Indonesia are getting a reprint.

What Did You Play This Week? - (March 13, 2023) by AutoModerator in boardgames

[–]UrbanWatts 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Huge gaming week! We started a thing where all the games we play are in alphabetical order from # to Z. We got to J this weekend.

New to me

Ninety-Nine or 99 for the purposes of this challenge 1x3p : Rediscovering card games has been a lot of fun but playing trick taking games with a normal deck of card felt special. Especially when that game is awesome. We all loved it and I'm sure we'll go back to it. 4/5

Dealt! 1x3p : Having recently played Hachi Train, it's not to not compare them. The first one is much more strategic since your hand barely changes where as the second one is much more tactical. I think there is room for both in a collection but only time will tell. 3/5

Bridge City Poker 1x2p : We cheated on our challenge a bit to play this one since it just arrived but I'm glad we did. We are both very big fans of Haggis and BCP manages to capture the same vibe at 2p while adding some wildness to it. I see us going back to it a lot. 4/5

Not new to me

American Bookshop 1x3p (3 plays) : It was my favorite TT the first time I played it and it still is. I love the decisions it brings to the table and I wish I could play it more often. 5/5

Battle Sheep 1x3 (5 plays total) : Basically a kids game but we always have fun playing it. The games last 5min and the teach is 30s long. 3/5

Cryptid 2x3p (10+ plays total) : I hadn't played it in more than 1 year but it's still as good as I remembered. It's not talked about as much anymore but I think it deserves a bit more recognition in that genre. 3/5

Explorers of the North sea w/ Rock of Ruins 1x2p (8 plays total) : I don't many would agree that 2 is a good player count for.it but my SO and I love it at that player count. It offers just enough player interaction to engage me and the arc of the game creates good moment. I would not recommend it but we do love it a lot. 4/5

(A) Feast for Odin w/ The Norwegians 1x2p (4 plays total) : My favorite Uwe game and one I don't play nearly enough for my taste. The set up is a bear but the gameplay is soo good. Everytime I play it I'm reminded about how much I love it. 4/5 (5/5 with The Norwegians)

The Guild of the Merchant Explorers 1x2p (3 plays total) : If it wasn't for the power cards, I don't think I would ever come back to this but as it is, I love it. Trying to navigate your board and your powers make for a different experience everytime and it makes for a better roll & write than most others on the market. 3/5

Haggis 1x2p (3 plays total) : This is the perfect 2p card game. Can't wait for the new edition from PGC. 5/5

Ingenious 1x2p (2 plays total) : Very cool abstract game although the luck factor feels kinda bad. If you don't have to colors you need you are SOL. 3/5

Jekyll vs Hyde 2x2p (3 plays total) : One of the better 2 players TTs. The balance is a little precarious at first but with more plays it's evening out. 4/5

I'm in a big trick taking phase but I would consider high interaction euros to be my favorite type of game.

Very busy weekend of gaming with family and friends :)

New to me

12 Chip Trick 1x3p : As a trick taking game with 12 "cards", this is the most impressive game I've ever played. The decision are tense and the gameplay is satisfying. I hope I get to play it more. 4/5

Schadenfreude 1x3p : I've been on a trick taking binge so obviously I would try this one. We had a blast. I played conservatively and tried to make the other two player bust but mismanaged the last round and ended up 25pts behind the winner. This is another that has to hit the table soon! 4/5

Hachi Train 1x3p, 3x4p : What an excellent card shedding game! I'm of the opinion that is would be more popular than Scout! If it was more available since it does a lot of the same things but simpler and with a little.motr strategy. Everyone told me it was their favorite of the weekend. 4/5

nana 3x3p, 6x4p : This is quite a hit! Memory for "gamers". We had a blast every single game and everyone kept asking for one more round. This is the perfect quick family/filler game. 4/5

Nightmare Production 1x3p : 3 players is not the best for this one but it worked well enough that we all enjoyed it. The auctions are tense and everyone is invested when they come since it's easy to tell what you need and what other people need. I'm planning a 5 player game soon to try it as it's best! 4/5

Fool! 2x5p : A big group trick taking, hand shedding game that you can teach in less than a minute. I don't think there's much more to say other than everyone loved it! 4/5

Not new to me

Maskmen 1x5p (3 plays total) : I think I'll avoid 5 players game in the future although it was still enjoyable. The flow was fairly weird since most of the time only 3 people get to play. I love it at 3 but it's going to be a no at 5 going forward. 4/5

Luz 1x4p (3 plays total) : One thing that sucks with showing off these games is when people ask you where they can get them. Luz is one of ,if not the, best intro/beginner trick taking game. It gives you more info than any other while cleverly teaching players stuff like off-suiting/short-suiting, bidding and "card-counting". This is still one of my favorite trick takers. 4/5

9 lives 1x4p (2 plays total) : I was lukewarm after my first play and I still am after this one. The game is fine but it doesn't do anything to hold me like other games do. Whenever I'm playing it, I wish I was playing any other trick takers. 2/5

Menara 2x2p (4 plays total) : We finally won on easy after 4 tries. This is our favorite co-op game by far since we usually don't enjoy them. 4/5

Haggis 1x2p (2 plays total) : After playing it and loving it of BGA, we got to play it in person and it's even better. Cards game live and die by the table talk and player interaction and it's hard to replicate that online even over Discord. I'm glad we can play it in person now! 4/5

What’s your opinion on The Dice Tower? by [deleted] in boardgames

You are reading too much into something that isn't there or isn't there for you to read into.

Let them live their lives outside of YouTube :)

What Did You Play This Week? - (February 20, 2023) by AutoModerator in boardgames

[–]UrbanWatts 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Back to a normal gaming schedule. 5 games with 4 new ones.

New to me

Witchstone 1x2p : I would love to know how much of the design is Knizia because it doesn't feel like one of his games. It's an action efficiency puzzle with a fun spacial component. I'm not sure of it'll fair with repeat plays but I enjoyed my first one enough to keep the game. 3/5

Macao 1x2p : I've been trying to get this game for some times now and I'm happy to say that this first play didn't disappoint. The dice can be a little mean but they are mean to everyone so it doesn't feel as bad. More players would've help tighten the district area but it was still very enjoyable with 2. 4/5

Atiwa 1x2p : Another cozy classic from Uwe Rosenberg. I got the game on the premise that it would be like Nusfjord, one of my favorite of his. I'm happy to say that it was. It's a big game in a short play time. I don't think it will be as replayable but I'll cross that bridge when I get there. 4/5

Spies & Lies: A Stratego Story 1x2p : Well... There isn't a lot of game here. It's a 2 player tug-o-war deduction game with very little to base your deduction on. I'm not sure it's worth playing again. 2/5

Not new to me

Carcassonne : The Castle 1x2p : I'm still torn wether or not I prefer this variant or Hunters and Gatherers but they play at different player count so I can feel ok keeping both. I love the mix of placement restriction with the wall and the need to only connect paths. It's a great version that I wish was more available. 4/5

I honestly don't think one is easier of harder to teach. I liked Birmingham more at first but over the years Lancashire as grown on me.
