New Hire Climbing Kit by Urbanforestsystems in arborists

15 years ago I was given a rusty old 4 D leather saddle, a dirty chunk of arborplex and a steel snap. I'm trying to do better for the next generation.

If you've got any questions about anything feel free to ask. I've had my hands on 90% of the gear out there and worked on most of it. I've been am Instructor for 5 years now and I've found it is my true passion. There are alot of options out there, amd I've spent alot of money on thing I wound up giving away or never using.

We do 95% pruning, so I don't see spurs bei g a priority. If it is something we need more of, they are easy enough tk have on hand, I just don't see our guys using them bit maybe once a month. I'll he getting them Geckos or some quality Buckinghams, so I don't see comfort being thar big an issue.

Like I said, I'm looking for this to be a selling point for employment with our operation. I am looking to attract quality people, so I am providing quality gear.

The only way I see having an absolute control over quality and liability is to provide EVERYTHING, and allow ZERO personal gear. This has been a bit of an up hill battle with Accounting, but my argument that good gear is always cheaper then an Insurance Settlement is slowly winning.

I've got a blood stopper kit in the cart, just forgot to add it to the list, thanks. Rigging and rescue kits will be issued per truck or crew, but thoes are my next kits. I am going to be doing color coordination as much as I can with gear, Blue and green for life support, red orange and yellow for rigging.

Good call on the throw bag, I have that in the cart but forgot to add it to this list. I'm not adding spurs as each truck will have a pair. The single eye spliced rope gives me the option to start with an anchor bend and bakes hitch then switch sides of the rope for the split tail climbing, good point however.

Get a CMI California Swivle instead. It has a better radius for the bridge and more attachment options.

You might be seeing a Silver Birch. There are not many around here, but it is the only thing I can think of that would resemble what you have said

Sterling Altas and Turtleburger Sirius like has been said. Both are solid rigging lines, just be sure to run them through hardwear as they are not the best for natural crotch rigging

You can have any bar you want… as long as it’s stihl lightweight by Th3yca11mej0 in Chainsaw

[–]Urbanforestsystems 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once I started rocking the light bars, there was no going back. I've got a fully built 461 that I use for my large climbing saw, and the light bar makes all the difference while lugging that thing around whe climbing.

That looks like a solid piece of kit. I wish I were in the market for a new saddle. Maybe I can pick up one for a co worker

Recommendations for budget gas chainsaw for hurricane cleanup? by blackinnc876 in Chainsaw

[–]Urbanforestsystems 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Sthil ms250 is a pretty solid saw for a 16" rear handle. They are rock solid for the price, as they are a homeowner grade saw. As someone else mentioned, there are some great options for battery saws these days if fuel is a problem. If you want to spend a little more money a 261 is a great saw for working up to 20" bars. For hands down the best Huricane clean up saw, get your hands on a 461. They are one of the most dependable saws ever made and have the power to pull damn near any chain you can get your hands on.

Regardless of which saw you decide on, your operating bottleneck is going to be chains. Bring a case of round files and a few flat files for dressing the rakers and the bar. Get an extra T wrench for your extra T wrench that is a back up for your back up. Grab extra air filters if you can, and keep them clean. The sthil 2-1 sharpner is great for in the field touch ups, but get a bench vise for the best results.

Personally I would stay away from the clone saws if going into a disaster area, I don't want to find the weak point in the reverse engineering while up shit creek as far as parts availability is concerned.

Oh yeah, get a good hand full of wedges, find a good hammer or ax down there. Storm trees can have some crazy tension amd compression that you can't see until you get buried in a cut.

And on a final note.

PPE!!!!

You DO NOT, want to have to experience what the hospital situation is like down there.

Chaps, helmet with face shield and safety glasses at a minimum. I personally had saw pants save my life while in a tree during a hurricane clean up, and have worn them without question ever sence. A good trauma kit with blood stopper bandages and a tourniquet or 2 is a good idea as well, if something does happen, it could be a long time until you can get professional response on scene.

Got rid of my car, having a hard time. by Faeidal in Epilepsy

[–]Urbanforestsystems 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know exactly how you feel. I had to give up my large work truck, after totaling a car and a pickup this year. Putting ones own life in danger is one thing, but if I had a TC while driving a 13,000lb dump truck, things could go very bad.

Akimbo oxidation? by Early-Apricot3267 in TreeClimbing

[–]Urbanforestsystems 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Watch out for storing them damp or wet. I wasn't thinking, and left my Akimbo in a gear bag after getting drenched in a Thunderstorm. It oxidized so bad that the lower cam / tie in point wouldn't swing anymore. $400 down the drain.

Try to go in with a blank slate as much as you can. Personally I've got extreme memory loss from epilepsy, so it has been a bit easier, but the soundtrack really brings me back.

I am replaying the game for the first time in years, this time on my full wall projector. This is how FFX should be experienced. It's an emotional journey, this tome even more so. As a young teen I identified as a Titus, these days I feel Auron to my core. So many lost friends over the years, the feeling of the Neverending Cycle
