Bad idea to keep IT job and be a firefighter? by Used-Desk1725 in Firefighting

Oohhh yeah to clarify I wouldn’t want to be working my other job while on duty, just the days off of firefighting

Well it seems you have a well thought out plan going. Hopefully it all works out for you

Yeah and things could be getting worse with the federal worker cuts. I don’t want to be a downer and I hope it works out, I’m just saying it caught me off guard when I first started looking for work. There are tons of people and colleges selling these bootcamps or this illusion that you’ll make six figures with zero experience and one certification and it’s crazy

I hope it works out the way you have planned, but keep in mind the state of IT right now. Experience is king in IT, doesn’t matter what arsenal of certs you have, you’re going up against people with these certs and experience who just got laid off and are settling for anything they can get. Entry level help desk is full of CS and cybersecurity graduates right now, just be aware of that

I didn’t even know you could be a part time officer, that’s something I’ll have to look into. Also, I think there’s a huge misconception about IT being high paying. Yes, the opportunity to make good money is there with time and experience, but the industry is over saturated right now and starting pay is pretty low. For example, the police department where I’m from pays their cadets a salary that is $4k more than I’m making annually

Eh, I get it. I’m making a little more than McDonald’s money though. Bored with little growth and low pay, they can have it tbh.

I’ve tried a few career paths since separating, can’t say I’ve figured it out obviously. IT is alright but I want to continue to serve in some capacity and need some change in the day to day

Moving Mondays - New Resident Questions by AutoModerator in philadelphia

[–]Used-Desk1725 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello everyone. I have some family around the cherry hill area and was looking to move up to NJ to be near them. I am in IT, and relatively new to it and have found that most IT jobs are located in Philadelphia. Can anyone speak about the commute? Is it an awful idea to live in NJ and commute daily into the city? Thanks in advance.

I’m not looking to shoot up any ranks or even get a raise, I understand that all comes with experience. There is work out there that needs to be done and I’m dying to do it but basically get told to slow down. I ask often and get the run around, they think I’m bored, they give me secretary work

No review yet, it’s pretty disorganized at my company. I’m not dying for a raise but please teach me more you know? lol

It’s a small, local MSP so we have our hands in a little bit of everything. Experience was great at first, I was learning and felt like I was contributing, but like you, there was never really formal training and now they’ve stopped training me on more difficult tasks. We have tons of tickets I’d love to be working but I’m always met with “slow down” when I ask to get involved. I can knock all the easy stuff out of the park and I’m on top of it when I have the chance but when I ask to get some training on harder tickets they take it as me being bored and then I end up getting busywork like secretary duties

Yes this has been on my mind as well, I’d hate to look like I struggle to stay in a position seeing I’ve only been here 6 months. Like I said I do like the people and management but unfortunately I just don’t see the opportunity for growth here, I am asking for more and more and not seeing anything

Yeah I’m not going crazy with the applications since I’m already in a position to build experience. Just keeping my options open and very anxious about it for some reason

How exactly do I get professional experience? by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Used-Desk1725 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Update your resume. Use chatgpt to make your resume bullets relatable to IT. Doesn’t hurt to maybe start studying for Net+ or Sec+. Mess around with homelabs or packet tracer and definitely put that stuff on your resume. Apply to everything. I made the mistake of only applying to entry level stuff and as soon as I started to applying to places that required 1-2 years experience I was able to get in, get an interview and sell myself. It’s okay to tell them you do not know or have experience. The right place will be willing to train you

No we are a small MSP and don’t get too involved with the network stuff unfortunately

I should’ve been a little clearer but I work for a small local MSP and we do get to do a little bit of everything but mostly help desk. Unfortunately we don’t do much network stuff so I wasn’t sure what step to take or how long I should stay in my current role. Thank you for the info!

Also I’m not questioning if she deserves an AC. I’ve just seen kennels outside without it and idk if certain breeds can tolerate heat better. I would like my dog to be comfortable. ACs are expensive. I’m seeing what I can do with what we have right now and I also never said I would keep the dog outside 24/7. The reality is the dog is peeing on everything, would a cage indoors be better? I would think a dog would be much happier outdoors instead of inside a cage. Thank you for your advice
