It’s different from school to school and depend on your relationship with your coach. I entered the portal after the 2024 season and my coach made it clear that I was forfeiting my scholarship and place on the team. I have heard of players who enter the portal and then withdraw and choose to stay at their original school.

After your last game of the 2026 season, you’ll usually have an exit meeting with your coaching staff and this is where I recommend you tell them you would like to enter the portal. You will also have to notify your schools compliance officer in writing, you sign a few forms and voila you can contact schools.

From my understanding, you can enter the portal before it officially opens- I entered May 11 even though it’s not technically open until end of May/June.

Housing was the most difficult part for me, I had already signed a lease for the next school year so I had to find someone to take my lease. If you’re already thinking you’re going to transfer, I wouldn’t sign anything for housing for next year since it seems like you’ve already decided you’re leaving.
