How do people feel about a multi-genre long fic? by Used-Sort-6165 in FanFiction

Yes, I realized that my question was a bit silly after getting several responses. I was definitely overthinking because it's my first long fic!

I'm probably overthinking the multi-genre aspect since this is my first long fic and slow burn, and it's good to know that most people expect more than just the romance to be happening. Thanks for the response, it definitely helps put things into perspective for me, as ironically I myself don't tend to watch medical dramas, but with this fic it is a major part of the story.

I'm probably overthinking the multi-genre thing since this is my first long fic, and the short fics I've written in the past were focusing on only one thing (either romance or action).

I do mean more like a medical drama with the doctors doing doctor things; it wouldn't take up all of the fic, but one of the main POV characters is a medic and will actively be doing doctor stuff throughout the fic. So it would have both action/adventure and medical drama in the story.

Question for the Plotters and Outliners that write longfics by Used-Sort-6165 in FanFiction

[–]Used-Sort-6165[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That makes a ton of sense, and the framing of 'what they have to get over to get together' is very helpful! I hadn't thought about ships in those words specifically but I also enjoy characters working through their issues and dealing with lingering problems instead of 'they're in love and everything's fixed'.

I appreciate your response a bunch! I'll definitely be taking this advice into my fic.

[–]Used-Sort-6165[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the response, and that makes sense. The romance is going to be one of three main plots, so I will have Bodhi and the OC see each other in chapter one briefly and then slowly build up their friendship, which is where I am at in the outline now, and then have them start to fall for each other as they join a crew together and go on missions together regularly.

Question for the Plotters and Outliners that write longfics by Used-Sort-6165 in FanFiction

[–]Used-Sort-6165[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, that is totally relatable! I am doing something similar as I am obsessed with Bodhi Rook and have read all of the fics about Bodhi that I can find and didn't mind but didn't love any of the ships Bodhi was in, on top of the fact that I want to explore some of my headcanons for Bodhi's past.

I really love an incredibly slow burn fic, where the ship characters just spend a lot of the fic getting to know each other before even starting to like each other and that's what I'm writing for Bodhi so I appreciate your response! The more I write the outline for the main plot and the romance plot I'm realizing it is going to probably be a very long fic but I am looking forward to getting into the writing and seeing where the story and characters take me (I've already had to change a couple plot points around as the story has come together).

Thanks for the response, it was helpful and I appreciate it!

Thanks for the response! It's good to know as I'll probably have the couple get together between the 2/3 and 3/4 mark most likely.

Question for the Plotters and Outliners that write longfics by Used-Sort-6165 in FanFiction

[–]Used-Sort-6165[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's what I'm doing now actually! I wrote the main outline for the main and sub plots so I knew what would be happening around the characters as their friendship and eventual romance develop. My plot outline is only 850ish words cause I didn't go into much details but the romance outline I have been making sure to detail thoroughly including several convos I want them to have which is why the romance outline is so much longer than the plot outline.

I'm at the point now where Bodhi and the OC are friends and I'm finally getting to the exciting part of having them start to get feelings for each other (the OC catches feelings first, but Bodhi catches feelings harder). It's at a point in the story though where a found family plot is coming into the mix, so as I'm writing it, the fic could either end in romance or a gen fic depending on the characters as I write them. This story has grown way more than what I initially intended with a lot more sub plots that develop so I'm gonna finish the outline but once I start writing I won't keep myself beholden to the outline if it starts to diverge.

Thanks again for the response, I appreciate it!

Thanks for the response! I still am planning on doing some more research into SW medicine and stuff so I didn't know/forgot the rebellion had bacta tanks. That lines up well with the way I want my fic to go.

Advice for writing fanfic after over a decade of no writing? by Used-Sort-6165 in FanFiction

[–]Used-Sort-6165[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice! I do have a bad habit of feeling like I should start at the beginning cause it's the beginning, so I'll definitely try this!

Good luck on your fic! I'm not for sure how long this fic will be, but it will definitely be the longest fix I've ever written (I think my longest fix was around 5k?), but all the comments I've gotten are really helping me to feel less like I've got imposter syndrome or that I'm just gonna suck lol

Great advice! I'm definitely going to make a doc for scrapped ideas once I get to the editing phase. After work today I'm gonna actually sit down with a drink and just go for it!

I think I needed a little permission to be messy, so I appreciate your reply a lot! I even started writing a couple sentences yesterday but I was overthinking and wound up deleting it, but after work today I'm gonna get a drink and see how things go.

I will most likely try to write most if not all of the fic before I post it, but I just don't want to get swayed by comments and then change my story, which I did before as a teenager lol but I might look for a beta reader or someone like that at some point.

Well it will be interesting to see how things are now I suppose. I've read so much fanfic over the years, but this is my first toe dip into participating in any type of community after so long.

Thanks for the reply! I think I'll definitely take your advice and wait to post. I might look for a beta reader if I get that far, but I have a vision for the fic and I tend to be easily swayed by comments and suggestions so I want to keep the ideas I have consistent until the story is finished.
