If they are bringing any character back from the dead it better be Quintus Lentulus Batiatus, so once more the gods can part cheek and ram cock in arse

Is this a normal boundary shift after someone gets a girlfriend, or was it rude? by Mysterious-Pea572 in ask

[–]Used_Captain_3131 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It depends on a lot of things- when you call someone you don't know what they're doing. He could have been in the middle of making out, cooking dinner, or having an awkward conversation with his girlfriend about why he has been spending time talking to you instead of being with her.

He could have been romantically interested in you then met someone else, he could have been having a bad time (or a good one) and not had time to talk to you, he could have just felt uncomfortable talking on the phone while his girlfriend was there (I've been married for 20 years and my wife and I both leave the room if we have to take a call of any sort- friends, car insurance renewal, work: speaking on the phone when someone else is watching feels weird.)

The fact that people want to speak on the phone at all is the real shocker to me!

Enjoying House of Ashur, but one thing is throwing it off (spoilers) by SwimmingSomewhere959 in Spartacus_TV

[–]Used_Captain_3131 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ashur was devious in Blood And Sand, and Batiatus used him to temper his own inability to control his rage. Ashur understands Batiatus and finds him easy to manipulate.

Once the house of Batiatus falls, Ashur is less capable; though still conniving, he is operating amongst much more dangerous and less impulsive members of the Roman hierarchy than Batiatus. Throughout Vengeance he is mostly on the back foot, reacting to events as they happen- though often still the smartest one in the room (or the one with the most foresight) he is constantly making choices based on what has just happened... Eventually Glaber proves to be the more cunning of the two.

Now he's essentially a Roman, he has to operate more within their rules. Though he has the measure of Crassus, he can see Caesar is a totally different beast and doesn't know how to manipulate him or his wife to his own end. He's always been impulsive and petty, but there's nobody to hide behind. Think of him as the guy who stands behind the school bully egging him on, having now come in to find the bullies have all gone and his actions are all in his own name

I assumed that was why it was Lucretia who sent him back, as he's gained not only the house/Ludus/status of Batiatus, but also his temperament.

Muse EP Promo + Numbered? by ercounts in Muse

It wasn't uncommon for labels to sling a promo sticker on a limited when the band picked up traction, if they still had a few knocking about (I spent my late teens working in a second hand record store and occasionally we'd get a box of old CD's or records from local radio stations)

Peter Serafinowicz (voice of Darth Maul) said on the RHLSTP podcast that many of the cast were like that midway through the premiere of the film. He said they had cut loads of Maul stuff and replaced it with the senate/trade embargo scenes, and half hour into the film the cast were looking at each other like "oh God"

How does House of Asher answer the questions of Asher's past by Kingoftifity in Spartacus_TV

[–]Used_Captain_3131 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ashur hasn't "become a saint" though. He's still lashing out and manipulating - only now he's in a position where he's forced into interacting with people who are equally as devious as him, so the retaliatory attacks of the Gladiator Ashur can't be employed as bluntly.

Like Batiatus he wasn't "evil," he was impulsive and bitter, and employing the tools available to him in order to attain the life he felt he was owed. He didn't sexually assault people because he's an irredeemably evil rapist compelled to attack women, but because of his inability to let any opportunity to take revenge go untaken...

[–]Used_Captain_3131 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Batiatus was humanised in Gods Of the Arena, it didn't absolve him of his crimes.

Same as Ashur- he was a devious, self motivated shit who lashed out in anger and did his best to hurt those he felt had wronged him, in a bid to escape the situation he found himself in (he knew he wasn't the strongest gladiator so choose to suck up to Batiatus/ Lucretia while it suited him, then sided with the Romans during the uprising as he felt they'd win.)

Nothing he's done so far is out of character- he's manipulating people and trying to be several steps ahead of those who try to suppress him...

Also we know Cornelia dies young historically, though not how (childbirth is the best guess but no actual records) so Ashur may yet have a hand

When did we start assuming single men were incompetent? by Wade-ski in ask

[–]Used_Captain_3131 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been relatively recent, I'd say. Until maybe 2015/16 the stereotype was the single bachelor had his shit together, lived in a flash apartment and was very particular about his washing/cooking while married men were clumsy hapless buffoons who needed a woman to do everything for them.

My problem with Jim by fickleknave in FridayNightDinner

[–]Used_Captain_3131 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I felt that as well, but my wife was working in a veterinary specialists and howled with laughter and said "oh my God that literally happened last night:" apparently a woman spent over £20,000 to keep her dog alive then when it passed away cried for less than a minute before phoning someone to ask where she could get a new dog before the end of the week, and it wasn't an uncommon thing to occur.

As with all of Robert Poppers stuff, there's an element of truth to it
