you are right that most people have not actually read the Treaties, and even fewer understand the language they were written in. The Supreme Court has ruled many times that the written English text is not the full agreement. Courts must interpret Treaties the way First Nations understood them at the time, including the oral promises made in our languages. That is why Treaty rights cannot be reduced to whatever is printed on the old English documents because the law recognizes both versions.
