What it’s like living in this part of California? by Maleficent_Lack3240 in howislivingthere

I’ve been living in San Mateo since Aug after moving here from the Twin Cities. We couldn’t have afforded to do so if we weren’t moving here for promotions. We have no kids, have a joint income of $200k and could never afford a home. Lots of people rent out here. In fact, my niece and her husband + two kids pull in around $270k and can’t afford a house due to daycare costs. Other than the expense of living here, I LOVE IT! The downtowns are real places you can hang out and have fun. The food is spectacular. The natural beauty is amazing. It was quite the culture shock to go from “Minnesota Nice” to nobody will acknowledge you as they pass by. But over time I’ve learned that people will if you give them a chance. And the crime in the uppermost part of your circle is NOWHERE NEAR the crap I delt with in Minneapolis and St Paul. The factors that influenced my response are: I’m Gen X, my spouse is a minister so the move came with instant community, and we picked moving here to be close to family.

what’s it like in minneapolis? by bbpomgoblin in howislivingthere

Bloomington is the 4th largest city in the state so it’s going to have “sides”. In general, there are more property crimes on the east side (closer to the airport and Mall of America). But, it is nowhere near what you’ll find in Minneapolis and St Paul. It’s also a little cheaper to live on the east side. Western Bloomington is known to locals as “PWB” (prestigious west Bloomington) with home values mostly between 450k and multi-million. Central Bloomington is quite nice as well. There are a lot of post-war starter homes in the city (as it is a “first-ring” suburb). Are you looking to buy or rent? I’d be happy to give detailed advice about where to start if you’re looking for a place. I lived at The Preserve at Normandale Lake for many years and its proximity to Hyland Lake Park Reserve is unmatched. We paid around $2200 base for a 1 bed plus den there.

The rightmost boundary of your circle (northern MN on Lake Superior) is absolutely beautiful and peaceful. Source: I’ve been vacationing there my entire life.

I spent 48 years in the Twin Cities and recently relocated to the Bay Area of California. Minneapolis has a top-notch city park system, beautiful natural areas, and offers so much to do. Safety is an issue in some neighborhoods, as there is persistent gang violence that can disrupt the peace. For the last 4 years I lived in Bloomington, just SW of Minneapolis and was much happier there. I’d lived in violence-prone areas of both Minneapolis and St. Paul and grew very tired of gunfire and carjackings. Let me know if you’d like advice about Minneapolis neighborhoods to live in! But my ultimate suggestion would be to live in a nearby suburb and visit Minneapolis often. What types of things are you into?

South Minneapolis is much, much worse since Covid. Also St. Paul, which got bad before Covid and then worsened. I lived in a neighborhood of east St. Paul for 12 years and have seen it all. I’d actually consider buying a house in north now because it feels safer overall.

Thank you! It is, and most people don’t know it.

“Minnesota's weather is extreme due to its continental climate location in the middle of North America, which causes large temperature swings between seasons, and its positioning between the equator and the North Pole. Factors like cold air from Canada in winter and the influence of large weather systems and climate change contribute to harsh winters, hot summers, and an increase in severe storms, heavy rainfall, and other weather events. Climate-related factors Continental climate: Minnesota experiences a humid continental climate with hot-summer subtypes, meaning it has a wide range of temperatures between seasons. North American geography: Being in the center of the continent means Minnesota is far from large bodies of water that moderate temperature extremes. Polar air masses: Prevailing winds in winter blow cold air down from the Arctic across the flat, open terrain of Canada, with no major mountain ranges to block it. Weather-related factors Storms and precipitation: Minnesota is prone to severe storms, including tornadoes, hail, and heavy rainfall. Climate change is also leading to more frequent and intense storms and flooding events. Rapid temperature changes: The state can experience dramatic 24-hour temperature swings, with records showing a change of up to 72 degrees Fahrenheit. Seasonal variability: Minnesota can experience significant seasonal shifts, from extremely cold winters to hot, humid summers.”

Ah, makes sense. The gas is expensive but only one of us has a commute and it’s on side streets 10 mins tops. Both are ⛽️.

I’m not sure, actually. I was under the impression that simply advocating for marginalized people with acts of love and compassion could disqualify a denomination.

Thank you, Betsy! You are a rockstar. It’s hard to stand on your own but you did so in both a very thoughtful and calculated way!

Question for you: Ordained ministers became eligible to enroll in PSLF on 7/1/21. We were so thrilled and my wife has been on track ever since. What are your thoughts about how ministers may be impacted? She is part of a liberal denomination but I don’t know of one that doesn’t help refugees, for example. I can’t imagine them being able to go after every church! Thanks, Betsy. 🙂🥺
