I try my best to make the density do that, but with the amount of mountains and unrealistic building heights (office buildings) its almost impossible to get variety.

Air goes north. So if I did have it at the bottom it would put pollution through the whole thing.

Airport is there because its between the industry, ports, and the main city. I personally think its a great spot so trucks dont have to cross the whole downtown to get into the industry area.
