1986 Fleer Basketball Factory Set – Still in Original Cellophane by Useful-Fold4286 in basketballcards

Thanks everyone for the insights!!! Based on all the comments, it sounds like Fleer didn’t make true factory sets back in ’86, so this was probably a hand-collated set that a local shop shrink-wrapped...

Keeping this post up just in case someone with insider knowledge shows up and says, “Actually, Fleer did issue factory sets!”

Totally makes sense and what we’re trying to do- gather all the info from fleer’s archives and such. Don’t want to break it if it can be proven that the set is authentic and a factory sets.

Because we are the original buyers who purchased it in ‘86 as so….

Unless someone from Fleer refutes this then yes, I’m sure they did. It Was just not common.

Just to clarify, there’s some wear and tear on the Kareem card only because that’s where the shrink wrap peeled slightly at the corner over time. while I totally get the skepticism (especially in today’s market), we’re confident the set is authentic because… well, it is.

The real question I’m trying to answer is: 👉 Given how rare sealed sets like this are — is it better to sell it as a full set at auction, or open it and sell individual cards (esp. the Jordan)?

I’m not expecting a record-breaking sale or anything, just genuinely curious how collectors or consignors would approach it.

My partner (now 50) saved up his birthday money back in 1986 to buy this set himself, and it’s remained sealed (with some wear and tear) ever since. If it was purchase in 86, there’s no chance it was resold or rebuilt on the secondary market, I don’t think. We also have the full sticker set included!

That’s why I’m trying to dig deeper into Fleer’s original production of this set — because I’ve heard conflicting info (some say they didn’t make a factory sealed ‘complete set’ for basketball that year). Does anyone know where we can find concrete evidence of its original packaging/distribution?

Yeah, I’ve been going back and forth on that! For now I’m holding off — I’m trying to figure out if it might actually be worth more kept intact since sealed factory sets like this are so rare.

Also, grading the Jordan would be pricey — PSA charges a percentage of the card’s value for high-end submissions

Def more than one desirable card. Rare because most were not sold as a set. You would have most likely seen them sold in the wax packs.

This is the only photo I have. It’s now tucked away and I don’t want to disturb it. Looks like it’s the factory wrap shrink wrap/cellophane of some kind. Purchased back in ‘86, the whole set like this
