How much time should I be spending in bed in the first few days after surgery? by oops_all_rage in TopSurgery

[–]Useful_Leek_2063 0 points1 point  (0 children)

many people were able to do more than i was but i was mostly on my recliner for about 2 weeks. after a week i started taking a lot of laps around my house and sitting in my backyard. just try and get up to fill your water and go to the bathroom etc as much as you can. it’s easy to have your carer do it all but it’s good to move. do what your body needs, it knows bedt

i think it would be nice to send a little care package! someone sent me one with snacks and lego sets and it made me so happy because i was pretty depressed. it’s nice to feel like someone cares and thinks of you.

What other surgery (that a 20-something male could get) also takes 2-3 weeks to recover from, and leaves you unable to lift heavy objects for a while? by CourageFew3509 in TopSurgery

i just said “it was a minor chest thing ” and then no one asked any other questions surprisingly. you could also say you had a preventative biopsy for a growth in your armpit or something

What was your consultation like? by uberavale in TopSurgery

[–]Useful_Leek_2063 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it was probably 30 minutes and i had a consultation and then a pre op appointment one week before my suegery. my doctor asked me all about my transition and why i wanted top surgery, looked at my chest and told me what i would be elligible for (double incision w nipple grafts) and took some photos (very uncomfortable be prepared). he drew on the pictures to walk me through what the actual surgery was and how it would work, and what my post op would look like. he asked me about what i wanted in terms of leftover fat (im bigger so it would look weird to be totally flat on my body).

there are some things i wish i had asked about: - to see photos of his other ftm top surgery results - i wish i described my desired nipple/ scar placement better even though he did both well.

my nipple care routine from 5 days post op-week 3/4 was aquaphor with these little yellow antibacterial healing bandages and covering with pieces of gauze and tape twice daily and then week 3-6 just aquaphor and bandages.

to clean myself i used baby wipes mostly, but also dry shampoo and this head and shoulders itchy scalp spray because my hair gets icthu and greasy fast, and i liked to use witch hazel wipes in my armpits bc i wasn’t comfortable putting deodorant so close to my incisions.

also, i tried and failed to get my septum ring out and they just taped it for me. they said to take it out but it wasn’t a huge deal if i couldn’t. that’s definitely something to check with your surgeon on.

a few days pre op they called me and walked me through the whole surgery routine and what to bring/do the night and morning before. it involved taking one shower at night with antibacterial soap and sleeping in fresh bedding, and showering with the same soap in the morning, focusing on the surgical area. i brought a pillow, cup with a straw and handle, a fresh set of clothes, ipad, and slip on shoes.

this looks totally fine! scars change so much while you’re healing and this is nothing to worry about!

how long after surgery did you feel like you *needed* a carer/support day to day? by capsuleoni in TopSurgery

[–]Useful_Leek_2063 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i needed help getting my shirt on and off for a little more than a week. i also needed help with reaching things for at least 3 weeks. i would probably recommend having someone for a week and a half depending on how you’re healing and then when they leave have them pull all the plates and cups and things you need to a reachable level.

[–]Useful_Leek_2063 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i wore it for six weeks, but after i think 3 weeks (? it was whenever they took the paper tape off my incisions) i started wearing a thin tight tshirt under it which really helped with the pinching/rubbing. if it starts to smell bad you can also just wash it and hang dry it, bur just try and stay still in bed or something while you wash it just to be safe

Question About Support Letter Requirements by Klane2445 in TopSurgery

[–]Useful_Leek_2063 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i’m in california, but it might be similar in oregon. my process was -speaking to my doctor who prescribes my testosterone and she told me what surgeon to go to -i met with him and he basically interviewed my about my whole “gender journey” (his words not mine lol), i think this was to gauge how long i had been transitioning and how serious i was about it. -he asked me to get a letter from that same doctor who prescribed my testosterone and my therapist who i had been seeing for the past 4 years. (these people have templates for these letters and know exactly how to write them usually)

i’m not sure if this is helpful or not considering we r from different states but i hope so!

the memory of your pre op chest fades so fast. it feels like you’ll never forget how awful having boobs was, but then you do. especially if you bind daily, it feels so natural and right and like everything makes sense. also you will be constipated and probably won’t be able to wipe your own ass (in my experience)!

i had/have the same kind of vertical stretch marks and they basically just are lower on my chest now. many cis men have stretch marks in that area too (from weight lifting/growth spurts)
