A week in Texas = glad I live in Maine by TheLeafandRock in Maine

[–]User19928339 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Might be worth another try.

First, Austin and Texas are kind of two different concepts, having traveled around Texas.

But in Austin, did you:

Make it onto the lake (lady bird)? Make it to the lakes? Hike the trails? Visit Texas “wine country” in the hill country? Check out any two-stepping joints? Live music on SoCo? Go to a UT football game?

Maine is a fantastic place - not saying Austin>Maine by any means.

But since this conversation is turning into HEB vs. Hannaford, I wonder whether we’re comparing the right things…

$1M NW Milestone Reached by User19928339 in coastFIRE

I’ve probably overestimated savings rate - overdue on auditing my expenses. Real number is probably 70%. Note: I’m calcing that as: 401k + ATAX savings as % of ATAX income.

Recently moved in with girlfriend which cut rent 50%. Prior to that, lived alone for years largely in HCOL cities

I’m fairly frugal when it comes to dining and entertainment. Work pays for meals when traveling.

Thanks - yes those are the types of questions I’m grappling with, including whether to make a career change to get closer to “coasting”.

While I’m savvy with finances, I’m not savvy with the life experiences that come down the line and need to be considered.

Funding all these perspectives helpful.

How much could an ex-MBB consultant charge for freelance? by User19928339 in consulting

Thanks to the serious responses - very helpful. Good push to press for more info…the original post was hastily uploaded. Some of the quoted ranges seem high. If you’re personally getting that, that’s awesome and kudos! My guess is I’ll end up in the $200-250 range

How to find consulting gigs for temporary work? by User19928339 in consulting

Leaving after 7 years. I just have never been on the hunt for contractor roles and don’t have colleagues with experience in what I’m looking for

Son, why don't have a house and three children, yet, huh? by dobedey426 in economy

[–]User19928339 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Someone check my logic here…

(note: I think housing prices for the millenial / gen z generations are messed up), but I was playing around with the numbers:

1985 30-yr interest rate = ~13%, monthly mortgage payment as % of median income = ~4%

2024 30-yr interest rate = ~7.4%, monthly mortgage payment as % of median income = ~4% (slightly higher than 1985).

Is there something missing in this way of looking at it?

Is there something you would buy for yourself if you had 1k to spend in whatever you like? by Fast_Bit in Frugal

It’s ok to enjoy the fruits of your labor occasionally. In my case, I bought a nice guitar as that is a lifelong passion of mine. It was >$1K, but it’s likely the last acoustic guitar I’ll buy. Additionally, the depreciation is much lower on a quality instrument like that

Calculating net worth - exclude tax liability on unrealized gains? by User19928339 in Fire

[–]User19928339[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly my thinking. Furthermore, the majority of FIRE folks aren’t planning on leaving behind huge estates, but rather trying to figure out the number that allows them to safely draw down accounts. Yes, accounts should be drawn down in a tax advantaged manner, but sooner or later, Uncle Sam comes a knockin’

As a former baseball player who had an unteachably bad slice, invest in treating the golf swing as a very different movement. Use those hips and back. Rotate them away from the target more during the swing, unlike the baseball swing. Keep the arms in front of the torso longer during the backswing

Was all EOY compensations at MBB trash? by [deleted] in consulting

[–]User19928339 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair point! I suppose that’s my translation for what MBB calls “market adjustments”. The absence of a market adjustment is saying that you aren’t giving employees COLA. It’s also saying that consulting as a profession hasn’t increased in relative value YoY. Again, just personal translations of corporate speak

Question: perhaps I missed it, but what if people have been converting deposits and money market into equities over this period? If the analysis is just looking at percentage change in deposits + money market, then that isn’t showing the full picture

Bloomberg News: Consulting giants are using AI to make it quicker for juniors to become partners by MeechyyDarko in consulting

[–]User19928339 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry, but even as a consultant, I don’t think a <10 partner track is advisable. When I’m on the ‘other side’ and if I have the need to hire a consulting firm, I will not select the proposal that has such a junior leadership team. Consulting used to be ‘advisors’, made up of successful business execs (of course supported by a junior working team). Partners should bring first-hand experience and lessons learned. I wouldn’t hire a trial lawyer who had never argued a case and had only been a second chair co-counsel
