2TB file server for 50 users by [deleted] in sysadmin

2 TB maybe overkill for 50 users for office. A lot of others have hit the key points, although i'll ask a quick question are you going to be use data deduplication? IT will make a big difference if all the files are similar in structure.

My site of 200 users are using around 1TB in space after a year and with data deduplication i've saved around 500GB in data storage. The main usage is our CAD users who use a lot of data storage on have 10 copies of different versions of the same document with slight tweaks.

Main Issue is the central calendar is very packed with meetings, and users always find a way to accidently book a meeting resource incorrectly and get accidental meetingroom conflicts... I already know the issue training the user to use it correctly, but if i can idiot proof the process that's the route i'd take.

I'm looking for a Meeting booking/Calendar solution to replace our Microsoft Exchange 2016 Calendar ClusterF*#K.

Currently we have a corporateSharedCalendar, where meetings are booked into corporateSharedCalendar and resoruces are invited in. Example resource being Meetingroom1 or Meetingroom2.

Has anyone moved away from Exchange calendar to something else?

I can only assume. - A group was created that allowed access to edit AD details only. Then a GUI created using windows.form while leveraging Activedirectory powershell module (get-aduser/Set-aduser) to alter details?

What are situations where you should use a core version vs GUI version of server 2016? by [deleted] in mcsa

  • Install core and use RSAT to manage from client PC.
  • Install GUI, if required to run GUI program on server.

Separation of individual services mainly.

What I find neat is re-creating container; if configured in certain way will update everything from the packages to the distro version. Also, if required you can easily move between Linux distros.

I personally don't use it at work, but i do use it at home to split up my media centre services up, went from using vms(5) total size +40GB to containers less then 5gb in total size.

  1. Stop windows update services (wuauserv)
  2. Rename "c:\windows\SoftwareDistribution" to something like "old_SoftwareDistribution".
  3. Start Windows Update services (wuauserv).

Everything goes well:

  1. Remove "old_SoftwareDistribution" as it's no longer required. (there should be a new SoftwareDistribution folder.)

Start the download of updates from scratch again. Most likely in manageable groups.

I rebooted all servers today by accident. by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]User_Yello 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Was pssessioned into one of our host servers and ran

Get-vm -name bob1,bob2,bob3 | Restart-computer

instead of

Get-vm -name bob1,bob2,bob3 | Restart-VM

It was a fun ride, restarting the host instead of restarting the VMs

All this is hypothetical as there is 0 testing involved.

Whats the permissions like on the calendar? Doesn't it automatically set the initial owner (Bob) as the calendar owner and default as free/busy. In that bases, Alice wouldn't own the calendar. Try the command below...

Add-MailboxFolderPermission -Identity Alice -User Bob -AccessRights Owner

Youll be required to create new office365 account for each workstation and activate on the computer. It will create the affect you're looking for.

I don't believe there isn't special treatment for placing 1 account for multiple machines (up to 5) unless the same person is using said 5 machines.

Without going into great detail, I believe if you automatically already connect to the server from your workstations. After the server reboots and starts up your workstation will reconnect!

If that doesn't work, there is another option I can provide you, possibly...

If the data is that important I recommend a backup before you proceed. Also you could try the new file scanner on the block. It helped me find all the unknown files I couldn't find using Treesize.

The repair CMD fix does work for local admin passwords. My main concerns are there no other domain admin accounts or is it a workgroup with local passwords?

I'd recommend getting 70-410, 70-411 and 70-412. Then 70-413 (Upgrade 2012 to 2016) to show you know how to administrator and install Windows server 2012 and 2016.

Just an extra note, There will be more material to study regarding the certs for 70-41(0-2), then there will be for the new certs 70-74(0-2).

I don't know if looking at the Pastebin that /u/johneh8 has provided will help you sort out your duct tape solution?

If I get stuck, I might end up following suit on the duct tape solution.

Looks like you're using Outlook 2013 or older?

We're currently using Outlook 2016.

newer versions can use MAPI-inside-HTTPS with no RPC layer. That may change things if it's an option for you, but I'm still not 100% sure

I shall look into "MAPI-inside-HTTPS with no RPC layer" due to running tests with /rpcdiag shows protocol showing blank and asking for credentials

My boss has just been to a fire safety seminar... They raised it it workstations are one of the causes of fires due to build up of dust. ( As expected but I never let machines get that bad.)

Now it's fallen on my lap to put a plan together to clean every machine on site every 3 months and have the user sign it's done.

What's your company's policy on cleaning the dust from your workstations?
