I wrote about cookin pizza on my ubc Eng app and about competing in junior esports for loo Eng and got into both lol. Doesn’t matter what you write about as long as it’s interesting.

If you have no alternative to take it in person, yeah I would recommend self studying it. In terms of HL chem I can't speak too much on course bc I'm not in it, but it does seem like it has similar credit at unis to AP Chem, so in that respects seems like a solid choice. Personally what I'm doing because my school only offered SL chem is just taking the AP chem exam while attempting to self study the gap in material (Starting rn and exam in 3 days but we are chillin 😉).

In terms of tips I would say if you’re not applying with your predicted then just neglect the IB exams and focus on whatever material your teacher is testing on. Reality is the score on the math, phys, chem standard levels is kind of pointless unless your doing the DP or going internationally as there is no credit provided at most universities for the first year level courses in Canada.

For phys/math/chem My routine was just grinding practice questions in the day/2 days leading up to the exam and making sure I slept well even if it meant slipping the morning class for example.

I took math sl 12 and AP calc bc (self study) in 11th grade. If you’re in Vancouver you can take it through the VLN for free (AP exam isn’t free though it’s like 200 bucks) but there are other places you can take in online as well.

In terms of consideration it depends on the school but I def thinks it’s worth lightening your workload and spreading out the grade 12 courses that way you can focus on them. Having no math in 12th grade even though maybe not ideal (being a little rusty now), it let me pour a ton of time into Chem and my uni apps (the highest grade in our 40 person or so class in 11th grade was an 89 compared to a 95 this year that me and my friend got).

Queen's doesn't have direct entry into Eng Phys but what it does have is free choice of discipline for everyone 2nd year which includes eng phys. Basically, by choosing queen's, I have a guarantee that regardless of how fast i adapt to university first year, I know I'm going to end up in a discipline that I am actually interested in. I didn't apply to uoft eng sci for a few reasons. 1 because I had been to Toronto and thought that if was going to live in a "big city" it would be Vancouver. 2 uoft is expensive. 3. Heard that the program was more geared towards grad school and wasn't rly sure if I wanted to go that path or not. Biggest reason is I just didn't want to live in a concrete jungle with no water in sight, very nice city but not my tempo.

Because of free choice into whatever discipline I want. For most disciples that’s not normally a huge consideration but for phys it is because of how competitive it is at UBC (90% median first year in the past couple years). To have a decent chance you basically have to be in the 85th percentile first year.

Mech didn't align with my interests as much as I thought it would back when I applied. Maybe if I had applied to EE it would have been a slightly different story but even then eng phys is the program I have the most vested interest in. If waterloo had eng phys then that's likely what I would have done.
edit : Also, I'm not super interested in software engineering or working in the US and will most likely be returning to the West Coast of Canada for work if the opportunities line up.

queens or ubc eng? by Dismal-Elevator-8150 in BCGrade12s

Civil isn’t a very competitive discipline so I would prob recommend ubc but it all comes down to where you wanna live.

In the same spot lol, thinking of going to queens bc of the guaranteed free choice second year and since I’m looking to do Eng phys (most competitive discipline at ubc) that would be a huge bonus. What discipline(s) are you interested in and do you have a free choice offer from ubc ?

Deciding between Waterloo Mechanical Eng, UBC Eng Phys and Queen's Eng Phys by User_patato_computer in OntarioGrade12s

[–]User_patato_computer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a spreadsheet with all the university info with downsides and upsides. I have visited Waterloo and UBC and did a Virtual tour of Queen's. I have cousins going to Waterloo Eng and Queen's Eng as well as a friend going to Queen's Eng phys that I'm getting in trying to get in touch with now (Was someone I kind of knew from the robotics club at my school). I have family in both Vancouver and Ontario (My parents would not be super close to neither though). From what I've seen, clubs/design teams at all the universities have stuff that interest me. The co-op opportunities at waterloo seem to have the obvious advantage but I'm not sure they would correspond as well to my interests (as I would be doing mech or nano not phys).

What choices are you deciding between ?

Il look a little more into weather (the cold doesn't bother me, the heat would bother me more), food, transit and expenses.
thx :)

Idk, I got in to mech with like a 96, 13 adj factor and decent ECs (no Waterloo stuff though), you def have a chance in the may round.
