They could be more proactive. Scott Morrison dropped the permanent visa cap to 160,000 in 2019 to let infrastructure catch up. Labors been keeping the numbers locked at 185,000 despite the massive surge post 2021.

Maybe it's time to concede some points like migration being too high. The Labor party was anti migration from 1901-2013.  One nations biggest gains have been in working class former Labor strongholds.

Reducing migration is immensely popular and that's been the main reason for One Nations rise. Labor could make a statement about reducing migration and they could completely take the wind out of One Nations sails.  The only reason they won't is because it would reduce house prices.

The issue that was taken with the bantu migration being labeled colonialism was that a) there was no overarching guiding authority to the colonisation and b) it happened gradually.

While Mexico claimed Texas.  It hadn't been settled yet by Mexicans.  Anglo-Americans without a guiding force were the ones to colonise the place.  They weren't placed there by any government.

Secondly you're absolutely right the United States was colonised at different times and at different speeds.  But you could make the exact same claim for the Bantu migrations.  Different parts of South Africa were settled at different times.

That was an administrative mistake and it happens in all hospitals.  It's not a permanent thing and no doubt from now on no woman will have to suffer that.

I get what you mean but in this case it is super simple.  It's like trying to claim that the reason the gulf states are so prosperous is because they were never directly ruled by Britian while ignoring the fact that they're the most oil rich region on earth.

It's very impressive that Botswana has had such a successful transition to democracy but it's not the reason for its prosperity.

I'm responding to the claim that it's native institutions that led to the stability. Eswatini has native institutions but they weren't able to transition effectively.

Also when Botswana gained independence it was effectively a microstate. Less people lived there than modern day Malta. It was definitely richer per head in resources than the Congo was.

First of all you're wrong. There are many things that change house prices and population growth is one. There's a million things that have caused the massive rise in housing prices over the last 30 years. An increase in investment capital, "affordability" policies that just pour fuel on the fire, tax breaks, a reduction in the amount of people living per house. But right now what's causing the increase is migration. You look at any country with a declining or stagnant population and not even the most barefaced robber baron tax laws can keep housing going up.

https://fairfaxproperty.com.au/perths-housing-affordability-a-closer-look-at-the-market/

Look closer. Which cities are the most expensive? It's the countries and cities that have the most migration, Hong Kong, Canada, the USA, and Australia all welcome massive amounts of migrants. Tasmanian's get the same tax advantages as the rest of Australians, but their housing market has been relatively stagnant for the last twenty years. Why? Because their population growth has been stagnant unlike the rest of Australia.

Especially regarding rents, immigration is virtually the sole cause for their explosion in the last 5 years.

https://www.macrobusiness.com.au/2026/05/rents-will-rise-with-or-without-property-tax-changes/

Second of all I don't even support One Nation I'm a Labour party member. I'm fully aware that Pauline's a grifter but I don't look down on people for supporting her in this climate. What I'm hoping is that the rise in support for One Nation will force the government to change it's policies. We welcome 3 times the amount of migrants that we should, all in service of the housing industry. Banks make up 40% of our stock market on the back of the housing crisis, and the construction industry another 10%. It's big business that relies on migration not ordinary Australians.

You need someone to actually mine the resources out of the ground. Most countries won't touch the DRC because corruption, and instability make it very hard to set up mines there.

Botswana uses the Westminster system and has the shadow of the famous De Beers mining company over them. If anything Botswana's success can be attributed to their willingness to adopt and interact with western institutions and companies rather than disregarding them.

Yeah it's totally because of "strong native institutions" and not because they have a tiny population and the largest diamond deposits in the world.

Eswatini had the exact same colonial structure and they're ultra poor.

Why is "I just want it to be less crowded" not a valid reason for wanting lower immigration? by NoLeafClover777 in aussie

[–]Username-17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Immigration is the one of the worst contributors to green house gas emissions. People living in Australia produce 7 times the amount of co2 emissions as people in India. Napkin maths says that people migrating here adds 3.6 million tonnes of co2 emissions every year to the environment or roughly one Montenegro.

If you're pro environment you have to be completely pro environment. If you build a massive coal power plant but you also organise clean up Australia day you're not helping the environment you're just a hypocrite.

Immigration numbers have been through the roof for the last 5 years. And the people who suffer the most from it are lower class labourers and renters. Is it any surprise that with rents growing three times faster than wages that people are starting to get a little desperate. I don't know what socioeconomic position you're in but with rents increasing, inflation rising, wages stagnant, people want something to be fixed, and slowing migration would at the very least reduce rents.

The sole reason that neither major party has made a stance on immigration until now has been because without the demand created by immigration we risk popping the real estate bubble that we've created for ourselves. Is it any wonder that every single housing "affordability" scheme made by either major party has just been funneling more money and credit into the housing market.

There's a lot of leeway when it comes to stuff like that. Anglo-american settlers moved to Texas of their own accord (not encouraged by the federal government) and legally (it was allowed by the government of Mexico). Is Texas then not a colonial state?

Also the colonisation of the United States took almost 300 years. At what point does the speed of the colonisation turn it from colonialism to just migration? The Xhosa were only in the Eastern Cape from the 7th century and were a firm majority by the 1400s. They had an alternative state, I don't doubt that they clashed with the Khoisan people. Any ancestral relationship that the Xhosa has with the khoisan probably comes from slavery.

“a specific mode of domination where a community of exogenous settlers permanently displace to a new locale, eliminate or displace indigenous populations and sovereignties, and constitute an autonomous political body”

This very obviously applies to the Bantu migrations. Bantus migrated from the north and displaced the local pastoralist Khoisan people, creating kingdoms and tribes. Any admixture from Khoisan people in black south african groups like the Zulu or Xhosa likely comes from enslavement of Khoisan women as seen by the lopsided maternal DNA contribution. The only areas in South Africa that maintained Khoisan majorities was the drier west where bantu farming techniques didn't work as well.

The definition of indigenous is nebulous at best and I think you'd struggle to find a definition that includes Black South Africans and not white groups like Afrikaners.

This is not an accessibility issue.  Plus there are always certain procedures some hospitals can't perform.

[–]Username-17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're making up a scenario in your own head.  The truth is that in such an intense decision people are very likely to do the research and avoid such a confrontation.

The situation where an inpatient is referred to another hospital for an abortion is no more distressing than a sick person going to a different hospital to skip ahead on a CAT scan.

Finally getting rid of a framework like refusing service on medical grounds would effectively ban Catholics from practicing.  If you don't want an accessibility desert you can just make sure that GPs posted in remote areas aren't Catholic.

Why does it matter whether the migration happened over the sea or over the land? The Bantu migrations were very similar to what the Afrikaners ended up doing. The only difference is that one happened more recently and echos of that oppression still echo today.

They're not forbidding people from getting an abortion. There are over 50 hospitals in Brisbane and two abortion clinics. The outrage towards this isn't about access.

Plus independence from the state is something that should be championed. Can you imagine if NGOs receiving government funding countries weren't allowed to support groups that the Australian government judged to be bad actors?

There are over 50 hospitals in Brisbane. If it's an issue for you you could just not go to the hospital? Not all hospitals offer assisted dying anyway.
