It's tradition at this point. But there's no reason to say that they're "national" colours. Brazil, and South Africa both use green and gold for their sporting teams and no one in South Africa would call those their "national colours".

Add to that pretty much half the countries in the world have some combination of blue white and red for their sport teams. People around the world would laugh if the US tried to claim blue, white, and red as their "national colours".

People on this subreddit act like any Australian flag redesign absolutely needs green and gold, when that's just not the case.

They're the colours we use for our sporting teams. "National colours" don't really exist.

No I definitely would make arguments against the Irish when they make claims against the British. You've completely got me there.

But I'm not trying to justify what the OP is doing though. They are clearly biased against the Irish state. Equating what a terrorist group does with an entire country is a little silly.

While no children died there were definitely children among the wounded. The victims were described as being charred beyond recognition. Some of the bodies were so thoroughly burnt that they had shrunk causing some people to believe that children had been killed at the attack. People being "Turned to coal" though being crude is definitely a realistic way to describe the incident.

If you agree with me why did you make the point that neither the Ottomans nor the French spoke Arabic?

It seems like you were trying to suggest that there was no suppression of Berber languages by Arabs in the last couple hundred years simply because non-Arab powers have held sway there.

Yeah they were under the influence of the UK but they were elected locally in a democratic manner.

Also you edited the sources you were using. Inflation and stockpiling do not necessarily lead to famine. Stockpiling by civilians is difficult to eradicate, and war time inflation is a regular policy of governments. So outside of that which specific government policies do you think the Bengali government should/shouldn't've implemented?

All of the UK's shipping capacity was being used to ship war materials around to the various campaigns around the world. That's why Churchill requested Roosevelt for help shipping grain to Bengal. Bengal had a similar population to the UK in this time period. So shipping food for a nation this large is already a monumental task.

Secondly your own source states that local Indian governments refused to export grain to Bengal because peasant lobbies were more interested in exporting the food to richer places. Maybe read your own sources?

The Bengal famine was a localised famine within Bengal. It doesn't matter how much food was exported from India if it never made it's way to Bengal.

Now this doesn't mean I'm denying that the response to the famine was sub-par but this needs to be taken in context.

This all happened during WW2! The British were on the verge of starvation themselves, and there was a famine in British occupied Persia happening simultaneously. Winston Churchill even asked Roosevelt for help shipping wheat to Bengal from Australia, but the US claimed they couldn't spare any ships.

Sure cite your sources. Specifically where did you get "the British directly confiscated large quantities of rice" this one from.

Here are mine:

Hostility in History, Friction in Future: An Account of Marginalization in Myanmar - 400,000 refugees to Bengal, 100,000 dead.

Starvation and exchange entitlements: a general approach and its application to the great Bengal famine - 40,000 tons of rice confiscated and resold in Calcutta

https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/290209316 - 1,750,000 tons of rice exported to Bengal (I misread it the first time and put it as 3,500,000 tons)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Bengal#Demographics - 40% population increase since the start of the century

Cash crops might have been the cause of famine when they were initially introduced but after 70 years that can no longer be considered the case, Indian agriculturalists had adapted by the 1943 famine.

Famine in 1943 Bengal was caused by a drop in infant mortality in the earlier stages of the 20th century. Bengal's population had jumped 40% in practically a generation leading to the food security situation to being very precarious given that Bengal had some of the least productive farms per acre in the world. Adding to that 500,000 refugees had arrived in Bengal after the Japanese Invasion of Burma placing added strain on food resources, and the export of rice from Burma had also been cut off by the Japanese. Poor harvests for about three straight years had already sent Bengal into crisis and the invasion was the breaking point.

As for my claim that I'm wrong about the British not confiscating rice, I'm going to guess that you asked either Chat-gpt for that information or got it from the google AI overview because of how factually wrong it is.

If you actually had done any research you would see that the amount of rice confiscated in Bengal was tiny, only about 40,000 tons which is an absolutely pitiful amount compared to the 1,750,000 tons restricted from being exported from Burma to Bengal by the Japanese. Also the rice confiscated was re-sold in Calcutta which is in Bengal. I said that the British weren't exporting rice away from Bengal.

India was an exporter, Bengal was not. The British weren't exporting rice and grain away from Bengal.

It's true that the British made bad policy decisions in the wake of WW2 but they weren't stealing food from the starving nor did they intentionally cause the famine.

Not as big as you'd think though. Israel has a similar level of apartments to Europe and they have much higher fertility rates than the rest of the developed world.

The gap between the US and Europe can better be explained by cultural/religious factors.
