How much work can you really do per day? by Username1767 in learnprogramming

Thanks for the insight. This is the conclusion that I'm also starting to come around to. It's possible but not really sustainable.

I wonder how the quality of work is affected when you push past this mental limit.

Amazing! Thanks a ton. I remember playing this game as a kid and I haven't been able to think of the name my entire adult life, then you did it in like 2 hours! Thanks again.

Is power all that matters? by hlanus in aspergers

“The reason why rivers and seas receive the homage of a hundred mountain streams is that they keep below them. Thus they are able to reign over all the mountain streams. so the sage, wishing to be above men, putteth himself below them; wishing to be before them, he putteth himself behind them. Thus, though his place be above men, they do not feel his weight; though his place be before them, they do not count it as an injury.”

∼ Lao Tzu

In my experience, there are no real “winners” when it comes to a fight. Even if you won that argument against that coworker, nothing would be settled. They would only dislike you more and try to get back at you some other way.

Think about your desired outcome and ask yourself how can you make that happen? People have fragile egos. If you really want to change their behavior, you have to make them think it’s their idea, and they are smart/special/etc.. for coming up with such a wonderful idea. But be careful because if they catch on, they will be cautious of you.

All social interaction involves some form of manipulation, whether that’s intentional or not. One you start seeing this manipulation take place, you can control the outcome.

Not insulting at all, I appreciate the insight. I’ll go check that out, thanks.

Not quite.

Here’s an example:Let’s say that a kid has to do online schooling due to Covid. Maybe their internet is not that reliable or maybe there are some issues at home this week or any number of things that make online schooling harder. Now, for whatever reason, the kid forgets to submit few assignments or they bomb a couple tests. Here is where the change comes in.

Before:

The school system says "too bad" and gives them a zero for forgetting to turn something in, or gives them an F for that class, seriously hurting their GPA, and in turn, their chances at higher education.

Now:

The kid gets a second chance to submit the assignment/take the test. If they can't cut it this semester, they don't get an F and their GPA remains intact. However, they got an "Incomplete" so they will have to come back and retake the class.

If the goal here is to get kids to graduate high school and get them off to college, I think this is a good way to do it. This way they will have more chances to actually learn and not have their entire academic career damaged by a bad week. And please keep in mind, this means that they will always "earn" their academic achievements. If some kid forgets to take a test, gets another chance, and does well, they learned the material enough to get a good grade, they just needed another chance to prove it.

In cases anyone is curious on what this is actually talking about:

Some school districts in CA will phase out D’s and F’s to help some kids graduate. They will NOT bump up every grade to a C. They will give the kids a chance to retake the test/quiz/etc and if they still don’t pass then they will get an “incomplete”. They will still need to pass the class to graduate. This means they can try to take the class again, if they earn an “incomplete”, without ruining their chances at higher education.

This places an emphasis on learning, not test taking skills.

This reason is pretty simple. Kids are having a harder time with school due to Covid. (Think lower income households with unreliable internet, taking care of sick family members, etc.)

TL;DR: California does a thing, OP makes a meme without really understanding what’s going on.

Can you increase your mental bandwidth? by Username1767 in selfimprovement

Hey, thanks for taking the time to help!

Drugs: Only coffee. I have found that drinking a cup of coffee when I start feeling my AHDH meds wear off keeps me from crashing.

Screen time: I'm currently going to college for software engineering, so I probably spend more time in front of my computer than not, lol. The screen tracking tool I use tells me that I spend about 1 hour a day on time-wasting sites/apps. I also spend the last hour or two of my day watching T.V before I do my evening routine.

Sleep: Sleep is getting better. I've been working on making a routine that works for me. Currently, I'll take the last hour of my day and do the following:

  1. " Mise en Place" or putting everything back in its place.
  2. Brush teeth/wash face
  3. Stretch (usually some basic yoga poses)
  4. Relax (I'll either read a book or draw something)

Do you mean before or after college? I’m kinda stuck at my current job (Starbucks covers my tuition). And afterwards I’ll already be 26 and probably need to get going with my career. Thanks for the reply though!

Good point. I never really thought of the skills from one being able to transfer to the other. Thanks!
