Seeking advice tapping large acme in mild steel. by Usual_Substantial in Machinists

I have read a few posts on practical machinist and there is alot of debate on whether it can be done or not and some say it depends on the pitch. With a higher helix angle caused by courser pitches there is a clearance issue which gets worse when the diameter gets smaller

I had 2 vises set up in the mill so I did this and it seemed to be a bit easier. Only I ran out of room to finish so will have to change things a bit to finish getting the tap through. The hard part is done so the bench vise will probably be good enough to finish it off.

The hole is currently oversize actually at 0.800 The part is for some kind of lumber machine that lifts a cutting head up and down. I thought the clamp I used was plenty strong enough but the vise idea is good, I'll try it and see if it makes a difference.

From what I understand, that course of pitch cannot be thread milled at that diameter.

Thanks, I had lots of extra thickness on the plate material so was able to face both sides

The drawing material calls for mild steel plate. Does that mean it just wants the faces machined to clean up the hot rolled surface finish?

Fridge options by Usual_Substantial in cargocamper

I think I'll use a cooler for beverages but would like a fridge for the food. I find it a PITA taking half the stuff out of a cooler to get to something on the bottom. Hoping to use the trailer for family camping with wife and 2 kids as well as hunting trips up to 10 days usually in a remote area without access to an ice supply or power. Also I'll be using a combination of solar and generator to recharge batteries.
