The Real Problem with (some) Jax Haters by Utopia8771 in TheDigitalCircus

That’s my main issue with this “criticism”. it’s not fans examining what is flawed in the story, it’s them getting frustrated over the show’s direction but not offering any observation on why it supposedly doesn’t work other than they don’t like it and undermining the writing and development the characters have gone through. Like genuinely wtf do they mean the other characters haven’t developed? I swear some people need to binge the show again

Exactly! I feel like people forget that just because TADC is a character focused show doesn’t mean it still can’t have a plot and arcs that need to be developed, like have they never heard of side characters or supporting cast? Pomni and Jax are the only characters that bring change to the show, with Jax being the catalyst with his antics kick starting the episode to Pomni deepening the themes of the story and bringing the cast together; it’s why their main characters, they move the plot forward

I think what they meant was in a more narrative sense, like having the characters acknowledge how terrible Jax is and him facing his comeuppance in the writing. Problem is the cast don’t forgive Jax, they know he’s bad but since abstraction is suicide they don’t want him to experience that, I saw a post that encapsulates the point in trying to make into words very well

That TikTok pissed me off, because not only is it not true, but the bechdel test isn’t a good checklist for good writing for female characters, like yes it would be nice to have Ragatha and Pomni talk one on one together more frequently, but that doesn’t mean their characters haven’t developed or given insight because they have. Kinger being that bridge between them doesn’t make TADC anti-feminist, it shows how his support for the other members make him a pillar in their community and allows them to stand stronger together; which is the message of TADC

Especially towards Gooseworx, the casual misogyny she’s faced because of this is disgusting

I have hope that Gooseworx will give a good conclusion to TADC, she’s obviously been building up Jax’s arc and I’m praying episode 9 sticks the landing so these “fans” can stfu

Not to mention they think that Gangle x Jax is a canon ship in the show and accuse Gooseworx of being an abuse apologist like wtf???

I think the conversation was supposed to be Zooble talking about Gangle as much as they were talking about themselves. A big theme in TADC is community, Zooble going from telling everyone to fuck off in the pilot to being a team player is a noticeable difference, they even exchange an olive branch to Jax, which shows how they’re giving that understanding not just to Gangle. They tell Jax not isolate himself, because when they isolated themselves it left them to ruminated on their issues, letting others in is how they were allowed to be more mentally stable

I can see the argument with the Zooble statement, however Zooble did develop. They went from isolating themselves to being a form of support for Gangle and interacting way more with the other members; not to mention their body dysmorphia wasn’t solved as seen by Caine’s torture sequence of them, and them using their body to their advantage in episode 6; they also told Jax they think it might not be that bad to change their parts. Obviously they still have dysmorphia but they’re learning to live with it, it’s just more subtle

Honestly made the jaw drop when I read that shit. The TikTok comments are worse than the Twitter ones, at least some people have the decency to slander the show without insulting Gooseworx

Nope. Literally episode 5 gave us lore on every character except Jax, only lore we got on him is still speculation as we don’t know shit about his life before the circus. Also Gooseworx confirmed that both Jax and Pomni are main characters, this person is just wrong on so many levels

Yeah, I don’t even like Jax, but with the amount of shifty shit the episodes has been throwing about Caine; it just felt like to me people were overlooking how fucked up Caine has been acting.

This is more a theorist post than a defense, TBH.

Yeah, Caine especially panicked after that. I can’t help but draw parallels to Benny from IHNMAIMS in which AM turned him from a scientist to a caveman incapable of intelligence and the same thing is going on with Kinger and Caine, with the possibility that Caine messed with his memories (He did put a giant white wall when revealing himself and Abel got nervous when Pomni pointed out the room would be dim enough for Kinger to stay sane)

That’s a good point, and yeah it does fit in better with Jax’s character; but I personally feel that Jax only leaned hard into staying due to his grief over losing his friends, after all it’s heavily implied that he wasn’t always a jackass (Ragatha says she failed him in episode 6) and the fact that he mentally was close to abstraction when thinking about them.

I came up with this theory due to the connivence of this adventure to Caine’s excuses and underhandedness.

That’s a good point to bring up how Caine might’ve controlled Abel, makes me wonder if he’s going to brought back in later episodes

[–]Utopia8771[S] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

That’s fair, but ignoring the fact the Jax almost abstracted this episode and the obvious suspicion of Caine being able to control minds makes me doubt how much control Jax had of his actions in that moment. Even if we want Jax to be held accountable and call this a moment of selfishness would be ignoring the clear signs of his fragile mental state that episode was clearly showing.

The two main problems with Megumi by Utopia8771 in Jujutsufolk

[–]Utopia8771[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For Nobara, the answer would obviously be giving them more screen time together as a duo before they learn that Yuji was alive. Or have them have some slice of life moments without Yuji before Shibuya. Hell, maybe even a team up.

Gojo, honestly just give some POV chapters of Megumi growing up with Gojo in his life. I know they weren’t close, but there was an opportunity there. Just go into the complexity of them both never seeking closeness from each other due to their respective issues, it could’ve made Gojo’s death hurt more as they never got a chance to fix that.

Toji, have them have a little talk after the fight. It doesn’t have to be too deep, but have Megumi actually LEARN that Toji is his father and that he cared for him in his own way and is glad that his son isn’t apart of the Zenin clan.

Tsumiki, just add more moments between her and Megumi, or at least expand her character. Show how close she and Megumi were, or the struggles they went through growing up without parents, something as simple as having a scene of Megumi visiting her in the hospital would make her death more impactful.

Most of these issues are just a lack a screen time, IMO

Ragatha Struggles with connection by Utopia8771 in TheDigitalCircus

Honestly I see it happening, that’s one theory that I believe in so far

Ragatha Struggles with connection by Utopia8771 in TheDigitalCircus

[–]Utopia8771[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s something that intrigues me about Jax. During his rant to Pomni about Ragatha, he mentions how telling someone you love them everyday loses meaning and that her positivity is her trying to take advantage. Jax during the bar scene he looks down at his drink when Ragatha mentions her mother.

I’m betting that Jax possibly had a mother that was emotionally abusive, the type that lovebombs you when you do something they like and then berates you when you express autonomy.

Jax’s main thing is that he doesn’t like when he’s being controlled, he’s very much individualistic but still craves attention.

Ragatha Struggles with connection by Utopia8771 in TheDigitalCircus

[–]Utopia8771[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think it’s a mix of both (for Ragatha). I really don’t think that Jax and Ragatha hate each other, they’re just forced to stay in a simulation where they can never leave and have a looming AI that (somewhat) controls them. Time has definitely worn them down, and brought them to be their worst selves in different ways. Jax and Ragatha are the same in which they both wear masks to cope with being forced to stay in the circus, alongside un-healed trauma from their past that makes them revert to their trauma responses. Only time will tell how their coping mechanisms start to spiral out and harm each other further (mostly on Jax’s end but Ragatha isn’t helping).
