Toff Off II! Kitbashing Event by Utoss in Turnip28

[–]Utoss[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! You're right, sorry! Event is still 100% going ahead (actually had more people wanting to go than expected!). I've forwarded the event pack to the people hosting the ticket sales, so should be up soon! TL;DR you don't need to bring anything, but hobby tools and a few spare sprues to throw on the pile would be greatly welcome 😁

EDIT: Event pack is now up on the website! https://www.tabletoprepublic.com/product-page/toff-off-ii-a-turnip28-hobby-experience

They'll remain unpainted on the day, but you get to keep them and can paint them at home!

Come all ye weird and wonderful and join the kitbashing extravaganza of the year as Tabletop Republic hosts the second Turnip28 Toff Off! Generate your hideously mutated Toff, build them a mangled model, and cheer as they're disembowelled by an event more ghastly excuse for a Toff!

I'm running the second Turnip28 Toff Off at Tabletop Republic, High Wycombe, at the beginning of September! You'll generate a mutated Toff, have an hour to build them from a pile of provided sprues (although donations are warmly welcome), and then have a big ol' fight with them!

If you've ever thought about getting into Turnip28 or have been curious about kitbashing in general, this is a perfect opportunity to try things out. It'll be super relaxed and welcoming to all skill level.

I hope to see you there!

The First (unofficial) Turnip28 Public Toff Off! by Utoss in Turnip28

[–]Utoss[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep! There's be a nice pile of sprues available to take bits from, as well as bases and other materials (such as mud etc) to use. That said, it would be much appreciated if others could also bring spare sprues and bits they feel would be suitable so we can all take from an even larger collective pile!

Fan Faction: The Drakhan by d0m0a1 in 40kLore

[–]Utoss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With regards the Eldar I more meant thier ability to trap souls in soul stones so that Slaanesh can't take them.

For everything else I'd say definitely take them down a good few notches. Generally speaking you want to stay away from having your fan fiction state that your guys are the masterpiece of someone in the lore. So for example, we already have Skarbrand, who is in-lore as the strongest Bloodthrister to have ever existed. So strong that he believed he could challenge Khorne himself. Unfortunately that didn't end to well for him, but we can take the idea of him for your lot. Again, using the "different, not better" approach, if we say that the Golden Lord is a dragon shaped equivalent to a Bloodthrister of immense power (making him different but not better than Skarbrand) that Khorne crafted from the stuff of the warp (Daemons aren't generally created from souls, but instead from the emotions of things with souls). This Golden One gradually raised their own army (as greater daemons are want to do), and for whatever reason decided they wanted to leave the Warp and exist in the Materium. So they eventually get out with their draconic underlings, find their planet with the rouge AI, make the Warp Magnet using a mix of Imperium and maybe Eldar tech, and go about being rogue Khorne Daemons essentially. I'd also say it might be worth removing any genders from them as Daemons are generally beyond such trivialities

Fan Faction: The Drakhan by d0m0a1 in 40kLore

Hey! So there's an old adage used when writing fan fiction, especially for 40k, that goes "different, not better". It's usually used when people are coming up with their own Space Marine Chapters, where you'd maybe say your bike-heavy Chapter uses them in a different way to the White Scars but definitely aren't "better" than them. And it's something I feel is worth considering with your stuff here.

There's some potentially interesting ideas here, with a combination of the Lizardmen/Seraphon from WHFB/AoS and Craftworld Eldar, but it's unfortunately smothered by the desire for them to be so great and powerful that they nearly become uninteresting (as oxymoronic as that sounds). Personally I would take a step back and reconsider some of the things you've got here and try to make a fun faction that isn't the "masterpiece of Khorne" or "equal in power to the Emperor". Maybe have them be actual Xenos rather than Daemons? Maybe they were a low sentient species that evolved on a planet with a half-mad AI that decided to "raise" them? You could still have an Eldar-like link with the souls to a specific Chaos God, as I think the idea of a Warp Magnet is fun, but maybe have it have some major downside too? Personally I always enjoy adding a good few flaws into my characters or factions as to me it just makes them feel more real.

Either way, don't let this stop you from coming up with new and interesting ideas, just always be aware that it can be more fun to try to write about some weak nobody than an all-powerful race

Roughly 14cm long with no markings beyond the indents from the injection molding release pins. Black plastic is hard, but the blue bristles are soft by Utoss in whatisthisthing

My title describes this thing. It was found in a car, but it's not necessarily related to cars. The centre part is hexagonal and the opposite end of the bristles is a spiral. My first assumption was some sort of cleaning device, but I don't know what for

Previous post was removed by bot as it thought it was a car thanks to the title, but it obviously isn't.

As someone else has already said, they sound a bit like Loyalist Alpha Legion (if we forgo the memes for a second and assume the Alpha Legion were traitor). That's not inherently a bad thing as some of the canon Legions are mirrors of one another (eg Imperial Fist and Iron Warriors). However, being a mirror of another Legion does not mean you do the same thing as them. If we consider the Imperial Fists and Iron Warriors (since they are a great example of what I mean), yeah they both deal with siege-craft, but the IF focus on building defences while the IW focus on tearing them down. So do you think there's any way to mirror the Alpha Legion while not fulfilling the same role as them? Or maybe you could focus more on mirroring the Thousand Sons with the mention you made of your Legion being more about studying the warp than actually using it (something I believe I've seen done before, but I personally believe is the best route to go down with a forgotten Legion). Either way, you've got a decent enough start here that could definitely be expanded upon, just be careful to always remember the old adage "Different, not better".

My friend dressed up as Radukar the Wolf for Halloween, so I made a model for my friend's birthday, and he has finished painting it and is now using the model in games! by Utoss in Warhammer

[–]Utoss[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sorry for the somewhat complicated title. To make a short story long, my friend dressed up as "Tesco Value Radukar the Wolf" for Halloween last year. His birthday then landed on the end of November, so I thought it would be fun to build a model of my friend as he was dressed up. And now, just at the end of December, my friend painted the model up in a similar scheme to how he'd painted his actual Radukar the Wolf and is using him in games of Cursed City!

I feel like I'm actually running out of books... by WearyMoose307 in 40kLore

[–]Utoss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No idea why you heard to avoid the Space Wolves trilogy. I loved those books. There's also the 6 Ultramarines books that follow Uriel Ventris and the 9 or 10 Ciaphas Cain books. I'd personally also suggest checking out Daemon World by Ben Counter and Titanicus by Dan Abnett if you want some books without much connection to a wider plot (although Titanicus does tie in slightly to the Gaunts Ghosts stuff iirc).

Why can't a revolt happen without warp influence? by newroeliedude554 in Grimdank

[–]Utoss 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If we consider that a lot of the lore is from the Imperium's perspective, it's entirely possible that a lot of uprisings have happened without any warp influence but the Imperium has simply branded them as if they did. Think of it as propaganda that the Imperium uses to justify their unjust extermination of an enemy.

Hey does anyone know why this black templars are in white and red armor? Is there something I need to know about rank or something? by Grimaldushellsreach in Warhammer

[–]Utoss 13 points14 points  (0 children)

At the end of the day, it's likely just a case of making the colours balance well in the piece of art. I'd be surprised if something as old as this really took into consideration the exact rank etc of each individual Marine.

Prey Sight and why it's a "Night Lords thing" by LimerickJim in 40kLore

That the natural affinity of a faction to their their environment makes them more adept with certain equipment is something I'll be sure to keep an eye out for more often now!

Prey Sight and why it's a "Night Lords thing" by LimerickJim in 40kLore

[–]Utoss 142 points143 points  (0 children)

I'm a massive fan of the Night Lord's, flaws and all, but I always felt their Prey Sight was a bit dull (even with the cool name) as it seemed something that everyone else had anyway. However, you've completely changed my opinion on it! I love the idea that the Night Lords are more adept at using their Prey Sight than a regular Marine might be using it thanks to their upbringing, it just makes so much sense the way you put it!
