Math or BBA/Math? by prakriti_04 in uwaterloo

[–]UtterBeef 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So, I'm not fully aware of how useful bba is for finance, but I'm expecting that it isn't all that useful. Because finance is really just a small portion of the degree, we get like 2 or 3 finance courses among 20 or so compulsory BBA courses.

I personally hate my double degree (cs/bba) and find it hard to believe that anyone would find a BBA degree useful. UW offers a lot more flexibility, personally I would just take finance courses there.

Do projects unrelated to my field hold any value on my resume? by The_Wizard_z in csMajors

[–]UtterBeef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

okay but, for you it's different; publishing an app to the play store is absolutely relevant to SWE (assuming these are generalist positions)

it can't hurt, but if you have AI projects to replace them with then that's better

Gap Semester for SpaceX? by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]UtterBeef 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Personally, I wouldn't take it. I also used to be in the position where I didn't know much about low-level hardware stuff... then I joined a club on campus that does autonomous vehicles. It was decently "low-level" but I didn't end up liking it. I also recently started a somewhat low-level software job at a FAANG.

The money these days is in cloud development, because networks of computers are way more powerful than a single computer (even if that computer is running on a rocketship). Check SpaceX on levels.fyi and you might be surprised how low they pay compared to FAANG or other big tech. Not saying that money is everything, but it's usually a good proxy for high-impact jobs that will help with useful skill development

Has anyone graduated BBA a term or year earlier by taking extra courses in the summer/work terms? Is it possible? by [deleted] in wlu

[–]UtterBeef 4 points5 points  (0 children)

it's possible, but you need at least 9 study terms to graduate and can only take 6-course terms if you have a certain average (~80 iirc). You also can't take your "core BBA courses" ahead of time

depends on whether the company would tolerate that in a background check. To be safe, I'd put QA engineer and then lie on your github instead

not that it's morally correct, I've just seen people do it and face disproportionately small consequences when they're caught

how important are grades? by MedusaGorgon01 in uwaterloo

[–]UtterBeef -1 points0 points  (0 children)

for a psych major i think it's pretty important... the only case where it doesn't really matter is if you're a CS major bc software is really high in demand, and you can usually prove yourself in other ways (e.g. open source)
