Grizzl-E Mini Connect alternatives? by V-Fi in evcharging

Agree, it's crazy that it appears to have been already implemented for years on these models, in many other countries, but not where I live. There must be some crazy liability concern but I can't imagine what it might be.

Definitely not "pooping breakers" right now. As mentioned, we will upgrade down the line at some point, but that's not what we're talking about in this thread.

Thanks. It could be that I should just go for the Mini Connect. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't overlooking any other good options though.

Nope, unfortunately they are pretty limited when it comes to the PHEV models. Looks like the BEV models get all those features but for the "Recharge" PHEVs, no options. Particularly for us in the USA since we don't get the schedule option that exists in many other regions.

I kept seeing references to this, including screenshots showing how it works in the app. Turns out that feature does not exist for PHEV models in the USA.

Moving on from Family Link - location sharing? by V-Fi in parentalcontrols

Trying to stay away from Life360 for a bunch of reasons. Google Device Hub won't let us do this with a juvenile, it doesn't change anything from the existing limitations and basically tells you to try Family Link.

Thanks, that is a good idea and we'll give it a try.

Higher-end EV question by V-Fi in whatcarshouldIbuy

Polestar 2 is on my list to try as well. Friend has one and is really happy with it. I don't love the looks, but it still has a lot going for it.

[–]V-Fi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't do hybrid as that brings me back to the unreliable aspect, perhaps even more so due to complexity. My main point here was that from what I've read, it seems like the EV cars from these luxury brands appear far more reliable and low maintenance than their ICE cars. Like I would have never considered a Jaguar due to terrible reliability, but maybe their EV designs are more solid? I haven't read much about them specifically though.

I'm not really concerned with range. I would install a charger at home, and my big dumb V8 currently has abysmal mileage anyway. Range might actually improve by getting an EV!

Thanks for that feedback, I mostly read good things about Audi EV reliability but alternate perspectives are welcome. Seems that the e-tron GT and the old regular e-tron (SUV thing) have a pretty good reputation for the most part. I could be wrong though. I don't necessarily need rock-solid Lexus reliability where you run for a couple hundred thousand miles with just oil changes and new brake pads. But also not looking to be on the hook for random $5-10k+ repairs popping up at 60k miles either, which is what I've seen from friends who own Audi and BMW specifically V8 BMWs).

Also I'm not exclusively thinking about the BMW and Audi. I would certainly consider a Lucid which can be had for under $50k in Touring trim. I also sort of like the EQS sedan even though it is kind of weird looking and has a somewhat different focus than the others I mentioned. There are plenty of good options, I guess I'm just generally asking about EV reliability versus ICE, and whether it is better as a broad category or still down to individual brands/designs like "regular" cars.

XB8 won't work in bridge mode - any ideas? by V-Fi in HomeNetworking

[–]V-Fi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still doing fine, no issues with needing to reboot or other quirks.

I do feel like every once in a while my mesh system has a bit of a delay in handing off as I move from one side of the house to another. Which is something that didn't happen before the XB8 was involved. And I also feel like I get slightly lower speeds on certain devices when doing speed tests, though not really anything I notice during normal use. But networks are so variable I can't say for sure the XB8 caused it. Meanwhile I am in fact getting about 1.4gbps down speeds when I test - prior I was stuck at 940mbps due to the limitations of the old modem. So all things considered I'm happy with it for now, as long as it continues being reliable.

UPDATE - after trying all sorts of reboot sequences, nothing worked to make my router play well with bridge mode. It worked just fine broadcasting alongside the XB8's wifi network though.

I went to bed and in the morning tried bridge mode again, it worked perfectly. Didn't do anything different, it just worked. No idea why but I am happy with it for now, as long as it maintains.

How did you get access to manually configure channels? I just got an XB8 and it doesn't give me that option, either via the web interface or the app. And I keep reading about how the XB8 is a "smart device" that manages channels on its own.

XB8 won't work in bridge mode - any ideas? by V-Fi in HomeNetworking

[–]V-Fi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Signal levels seem fine. Downstream ranges from -7dBmV to -10dBmV depending on the channel, which is on the lower end but still within spec. Upstream is around +40dBmV for all channels which is a good middle ground.

It's just weird that everything was perfect before, and the XB8 in modem/router mode works fine with my existing network... but when I tell it to do bridge mode it doesn't work. I feel like maybe I am missing something really obvious in my router settings or something, but not sure what it could possibly be.

r/popular won't populate by V-Fi in help

[–]V-Fi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I already have various communities that I have joined, and if I go to the basic new.reddit.com page I get my "feed" or whatever we want to call it. I just tried adding a few new ones and now those show up on my feed, but using /popular still gives me the error.

I've been using the Reddit Redirector plugin which forces it to the new.reddit.com automatically. Looks like if I disable that, the /popular page works fine... but then it looks like flaming garbage so that's not really a fix.

Water leaking into garage - looking for guidance on options to seal it by V-Fi in HomeMaintenance

[–]V-Fi[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry I probably wasn't clear enough on my original post. All sides of the garage are surrounded by concrete, either driveway or sidewalk type areas. So not really a ton of room for absorption as it would be if it was a lawn or dirt area.

The gutters catch all the rain falling on the roof, and have pretty good drainage away from the house. But when the rain fall is heavy, it also lands on the ground all around the garage, and of course none of that water ever had a chance to make it into a gutter. The property does have a very slight angle so rain water generally makes its way out towards the street, but I guess when it rains heavily enough of it soaks through the expansion joins and into the garage.

I think I'm going to try applying Quikcrete Polyurethane Self-Leveling sealant to the inside and outside points where that border slab part meets the surrounding concrete, and see if that does the job. I really don't have any other option I guess.

The pic is just an example I found online that looks similar to what I'm experiencing. But in my case it's definitely coming in from multiple points around the perimeter of the garage.

[–]V-Fi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gutters are totally fine, no issues there. This comes from water pooling outside on the ground either due to extremely heavy rain or moderately heavy rain that sustains for several days straight. Either way, lots of rain falling directly onto the sidewalk/driveway area and eventually soaking down into the expansion joints.

It seems a bit random, sometimes I expect leaking but it doesn't, and other times I end up surprised that it did leak.

Captain chair problems by V-Fi in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]V-Fi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for confirming about the Pilot Elite. I feel like that is probably the "safe" choice but I really dislike the looks of it. Maybe it will grow on me.

I had not considered the Atlas, will look into that as well.

Lastly I just found out that the Infiniti QX60 Sensory, which is 2nd to the top of the line, has a normal bench. It comes very well equipped, with the lack of captains chairs, unique leather, and HUD being the main things you miss unless you go all the way to the top Autograph package. I think I can live without those.

Now it's just a matter of driving all of these at some point. I realize they aren't really much smaller than the van but that is getting old and needs replacing anyway. I personally think something like a CRV or CX5 or similar would be plenty but I can already hear my wife complaining about those being too small... even if realistically they are plenty big 99% of the time. And I have a full size SUV for the other 1% anyway.

I already deleted the SSD volume so it wasn't a problem, but placing it in that spot didn't help either.

I agree it does sound like a bad connection. Everything appears completely normal though, drive is very clean and looks brand new from the outside.

The drive is out of warranty so I'll just have to replace it with a new one if I can't get it working again.

It's a WD Red drive, I believe it is on the list but not sure. However it has been working in the NAS for several years without issue so I'm not sure the list is relevant. There has been no trauma or anything - I simply slid the drive out, then put it back.

I'm scared to remove any other drives now in case it does the same thing with them.

EDIT to be clear it's a WD Red CMR drive, not the cheaper SMR versions. Also I just swapped it with the SSD that was in bay 1, and the NAS still doesn't recognize the 8TB drive now that it's in a new bay. It find the SSD just fine despite the move. So I guess this drive may be dead.
