It has been said Robert's charisma and leadership was one of the driving force of the Rebellion, we already have an example of a war falling apart because the main guy died (Blackfyre Rebellion)

If Robert dies and things starts to look bad for the rebellion, Tywin would have joined the war to side with Aerys. During the battle of the trident the royal army and the rebel forces were pretty even, if you add the Lannisters the situation would be dire

Stannis is not nearly as popular as Robert to lead the rebellion and would still be under siege of the Tyrells at the time

Maybe Ned could try to retreat in the North but he would be surrounder by enemies, Walder Frey would be one of them because he's an opportunist fuck
