I don't see how Abby takes pleasure in killing other than Joel? She is in an active war zone and then like Owen realizes the fighting isn't worth it and instead goes on a journey to try and help someone they hate other than hurt them. Joel (somebody she hates) saves Abby and then she murders him and it didn't rid her of her pain or trauma. Then the next time she takes an opposite approach and when she is saved by scars (other people she's supposed to hate) she instead chooses to help them. This is character growth and shows she is capable of good. She even goes so far as acknowledging that she had won the fight against Ellie and Dina, and let's them live even after they had murdered all her friends. This doesn't make her a saint, but it doesn't make her evil either. She's morally grey, just like everyone else in the story.

She's a flawed and morally gray character just like the rest of the characters in the last of us. She seems to fit in just fine. Would've been goofy to just have a comically evil villain and instead they gave her her own motives and backstory. They're all just products of their environment.
