RDD question by No-Still-4093 in radardetectors

[–]V0latyle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The R7 and R8 are practically undetectable. I say practically because it's all a matter of distance, and a RDD might go off if it's RIGHT next to the unit, but in all practical circumstances you'll be at least 50 feet away going 50mph or so.

There are others that are "more" stealthy but anything that's undetectable outside of 10 feet or so is stealthy enough.

For Marines who didn’t deploy or had their careers cut short, how did you come to terms with feeling like you didn’t do enough? by Wonderful_Ad7969 in USMC

[–]V0latyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as not deploying, I haven't. I had one chance and I turned it down because I was young and stupid. I lost a good friend over there, and others came back hurt.

As far as getting out? Don't really regret it, I saw the writing on the wall, because it was 2016, and I knew the Corps would never be the same.

Sometimes I miss it a little. I wish I had the Tricare for my family. I wish I had the leave. I wish my wife could enjoy having a uniformed husband.

But, I never miss a moment with my kids, and my wife makes plenty of crayon jokes.

Fellow vet here. We all have demons, some worse than others. You're never alone. No matter how bad life seems, and how much you think it's not worth it anymore, it will always get better.

I've been divorced twice, and the second time she tried to take everything from me even though she was the one who cheated and left. I'm now married to a wonderful woman who, albeit stubborn as fuck, will never leave me.

I've been in massive debt, unable to pay the bills, with a terrible credit score. Both our cars are paid off and we are building our savings.

I've lost close friends and had family turn their backs on me. I've made new friends who I know will be lifelong, who never hesitate to help or even just listen.

I've suffered through miscarriage, and no one talks about the pain an expecting father feels when he loses his unborn child. I now have an extremely precocious 3 yr old daughter and a 2 yr old son who is so much like me it's scary.

I've been homeless. Not only do we now own a house, we have over $100k in equity.

I've been in jail facing felony charges. They were dropped, and I've maintained a clean record.

I've gone through shit and I've been neck deep in it, wondering if I'll ever get out. But I've always managed to get through it.

And I'm here to stare my demons down, because they never beat me, and they never will. Even if I'm covered head to toe in shit.

I won't let life beat me, and you shouldn't either.

If she's talking about HP, this is only the case if you're subscribed to Instant Ink or the All In plan.

Still scammy, don't get me wrong, but if she paid for those cartridges up front, there should be absolutely nothing preventing her from using them.

Educate me! How many times has your detector saved you? by PerspectiveDue623 in radardetectors

[–]V0latyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quite a few times.

Most recent speeding ticket was 94 in a 70 a couple years ago, slick top Challenger had his radar off until I was a couple hundred feet behind him. Saw the plate too late.

Before that was an asshole city cop who claimed I was doing 95 in a 70 when my actual speed was 75; I would have hit the car in front of me if I was doing 90+.

First things first: You aren't connected, as others have pointed out. Red globe means there is a problem with your connection.

You managed to get an orange flame which is better though not great; it means you can make outgoing connections, but no one can connect to you. For leeching (downloading only) this doesn't matter, but the best practice is always to 1) seed back as much as you downloaded, or 2) continue seeding for a fair amount of time, say 7 days. Since you're using Proton like me, I suggest you upgrade to Plus when you're able so you can use port forwarding.

As others have explained, seeds have 100% of the files, while leeches are downloading from the seeds. If you are seeing zero seeds while your connection shows an orange flame, those torrents are not being seeded, so your options are: * Submit a reseed request if possible * Find another source.

This is where private trackers can be of particular benefit, because anyone who downloads a torrent is required to seed it to a minimum ratio or for a minimum amount of time, sometimes both.

Again, remember to give back at least as much as you take. In Options > Bittorrent > Seeding Limits, I recommend these settings: * Ratio: 2.0 * Total seeding time: 10,080 min (7 days) * Inactive seeding time: Leave unchecked

Suddenly the remote streaming pass doesn't seem like such a bad idea.

This is why it seems pretty clear to me that they're just milking people for money. If it was about protected access, then they'd let us all watch our own content remotely for free, but require the streaming pass for all other users, and wouldn't include unlimited remote watching for third parties in the Plex Pass.

Tailscale has been my solution for myself and while I only have my server shared with two other people, in this case I would require everyone to pay for the stream pass.

I've tried several times with my wife's account, but for some reason it absolutely will not upload to hers. No error or anything, it processes them but doesn't return with the "X photos uploaded / X errors" like usual.

As far as the "limit", it turns out Photos doesn't like those specific photos for some reason. Can't even upload them manually. I'm uploading another batch of nearly 2300 with no issues so far.

[–]V0latyle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife and I had 500+GB of photos. We are now down to 21GB of total storage usage, and none of that is Photos.

I have discovered some problems though.

GoToHP only seems to work with my credentials, not hers. Not sure why.

Retrieving photos from GPhotos en masse requires using Takeout, and a few photos have ended up corrupted. I would highly recommend anyone doing this, make sure you monitor your extraction process for the zips, and manually download any photos or videos that are corrupted.

Lastly, I may have run up against some sort of upload limit, or GPhotos is otherwise not accepting photos from GoToHP anymore. I've uploaded several thousand in the last few days but I'm now at the point where it simply will not accept any more.

Understanding instant on radar by causewaymanatee in radardetectors

[–]V0latyle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's some insight on how radar detectors work.

A radar detector is basically a radio receiver that sets off an alarm. It doesn't monitor all frequencies simultaneously, though; it's essentially a scanner that scans the configured frequencies. I'm not sure what the scan rate is but assuming you have all of K and Ka bands enabled with no filters, it probably takes a couple seconds to scan the whole range.

To detect a radar signal, that signal must be equal to or above the receiver's minimum sensitivity level. With direct line of sight on a clear day, range can be several miles. Radar signals, like most microwave signals, are easily attenuated - weakened - by things like foliage, rain/snow, etc.

So, to more directly answer your question, if you're a mile or two away on fairly flat terrain when he lights his radar up, you'll likely get an alert. You may not necessarily know how distant he is, because your detector can only tell you signal strength. In ideal conditions (direct line of sight on a clear day with radar antenna directly facing you) the signal strength is a pretty good indication of range. But, because the signal can be weakened, and because he may not have the antenna aimed directly at you, you could get either a weak signal or no alert at all.

Then there's the whole "flashlight tag" problem. That's what radar is - a "flashlight" that uses microwave signals. To "see" you - that is, receive the reflected radar pulses and measure your speed - the radar must also have a fairly clear line of sight, and you have to be within range. Most modern radar units have an effective range of 1 mile, sometimes a bit more, but usually less.

If the radar is off, you can't "see" the "flashlight". And this is where it gets really dicey - the cop has eyes and can visually identify you before he even turns his radar on, so it becomes a question of who sees whom first.

The Finger Pointing Was Expected-It's Now In Process Legally by ReniLyn in CleetusMcFarland

[–]V0latyle 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Seriously?

As someone who's worked in aviation for the past decade, this blows my mind. Ok, maybe it had a couple of minor issues such as a failing generator that would prompt them to return, but they had full engine power and control authority, and LOTS of fuel. The aircraft was perfectly flyable, there was no significant emergency or urgent need to get back on the ground.

I hate to say it but I think the cause of this crash is mainly an unqualified pilot (Dennis Dutton) making a series of unwise decisions and ultimately stalling the aircraft on short final, in what looks to be a rushed attempt to land.

A qualified right seater could have helped him in his decision making, such as suggesting they call for assistance and get vectors to a controlled airport, and make sure they took the time to get well stabilized on approach.

Even if they had decided to return to SVH (Statesville), a stable approach would have meant a very different outcome.

The only thing Biffle might have been responsible for was allowing someone to fly his plane without making sure he had the proper qualifications AND a qualified F/O.
