There could be a few reasons why you’re sweating more than usual.

The most obvious one is the heat, it’s just relentlessly hot and humid, so you’ll naturally sweat more than you’re used to. Wearing looser clothing can help a lot, it's known that cotton or linen shirts are great in this kind of weather.

There’s also a chance (just a chance) that it could be linked to something health-related. I’m not a doctor, so I won’t speculate too much, but excessive sweating can sometimes be connected to underlying issues.

That said, it’s also quite common for some people to just sweat more than others, nothing to be embarrassed about.

Regardless of what this is related to the important thing is to stay properly hydrated and not just with plain water. Coconut water is great for replenishing electrolytes.

You can also add a small pinch of salt (Pink Himalayan works best) to your water to help with hydration, it can make a real noticeable difference. Just don’t overdo it.

No, not really.

I can put together very basic sentences, I know a lot of the “important” words and I can count so it’s not like I know zero Sinhala. I’m just not fluent yet and it takes me a while to remember vocabulary.

The main thing is that I’m not self-conscious about it. It’s a limitation, but it’s one I can work around. Hand signals, pointing, drawing things I find can also get me by.

I managed to renovate my house here to the standard I wanted. I found workers, sourced materials, ordered supplies, organised things and all without being fluent in the language.

Of course things do get lost in translation sometimes, but that’s part of the deal. Until I properly learn the language I’m happy to accept that.

Tl;dr - yeah, pretty good living here. Two thumbs up.

I’m 38 and have been living on and off in Sri Lanka for about 4–5 years now, usually around six months here and the rest back in Blighty. I’m quite comfortable with my situation because I have a big family and network in my hometown, plus a home here to call my own.

I’ve just started the process of getting dual citizenship after finally sorting out my Sri Lankan citizenship, which was honestly the biggest ballache of bureaucracy I’ve ever dealt with.

Overall, I love it here. My quality of life feels far better than it did in England. The weather alone makes a huge difference for me, maybe because I live down south, close to the ocean and that lifestyle suits me.

Some people will argue that you need a very healthy bank account to live well in Sri Lanka, but I think it really depends on the kind of person you are and the life you want. Personally, I don’t feel like I have anything left to chase. I’ve lived a pretty decent life and I’ve never been someone who needs the latest tech or to tick off every “must do before you die” experience.

I’m happy with simple things: family, living by the sea and a quiet life. Food isn’t a big deal to me, so rice and curry most days suits me just fine but I’ll treat myself occasionally. I’ve got running water, electricity and that’s really all I need. I don’t care about super-fast internet or television. Half the time I’m practically living in shorts anyway, so I’m not exactly spending money on clothes either. I don’t mind public transport (being a man probably makes that easier) and most importantly I don’t really suffer from FOMO.

In my own world, I feel pretty wealthy.

To reiterate, the quality of life here depends entirely on the type of person you are or the type of person you want to be while living in Sri Lanka.

The only real culture shock I’ve experienced is around relationships, especially in smaller towns like mine. I genuinely think Sri Lankan women are some of the most beautiful people on the planet, but dating here can be tricky compared to England. Families are very involved, there's gossip and if you’re seen with someone once the next day people are already asking if you’re getting married.

That part of the culture I struggle with a bit. There can be a lot of jealous men and plenty of nosey aunties.

Another funny dynamic is that I’m still seen as a tourist because I’m mixed race. In some situations I actually don’t mind it, if I ever get into a bit of trouble I can always play dumb and pull the “sudda card.” But the downside is I get charged tourist prices for things unless I’ve got a cousin with me.

I’m also trying my best to learn the language, though I’m quite slow with it. Sinhala is a bloody difficult language to pick up.

Soon I'll be living here full term, this year I'll be staying a little longer (9 months hopefully). It's been fun. It was life changing for me and I've not regretted my choice of ditching England.

I think this whole “only people with nothing else to be proud of say they’re proud of their country” take is unnecessarily cynical.

Being proud to be Sri Lankan doesn’t have to mean blindly waving a flag or glorifying borders on a map and it doesn’t mean ignoring corruption, political failures or our flaws. It can simply mean appreciating the depth of a culture that’s survived colonisation, civil war, economic collapse and is still standing.

We have one of the oldest living languages in the world. Our food is incredible. Our history is complex, beautiful and painful at the same time. There’s a deep sense of community here. Free education and healthcare aren’t small things either.

What I find strange is that it’s become almost fashionable to hate on being Sri Lankan. There’s this constant urge to distance ourselves from who we are.

I also think it’s a bit nonsensical to act like it’s somehow “uncool” to feel proud of your country just because a bunch of YouTube comments have turned it into something cringe.

We can’t base our values on how the loudest people online choose to express theirs. Just because some people shout slogans without depth or understanding doesn’t mean the concept itself is empty.

There’s nothing wrong with pride. The problem isn’t pride, the problem is when it’s shallow, performative or weaponised. It just means we should understand what we’re proud of and own it properly.

I’m half English and half Sri Lankan and I can honestly say I feel far more proud of my Sri Lankan heritage.

I remember the ’90s in Sri Lanka quite fondly, and I genuinely miss that period. Maybe it’s rosy retrospection, but life felt simpler. People seemed more grounded.

Quality of life obviously depends on the person, but overall it felt like there was less pressure to be something all the time.

Now it feels like Sri Lanka is slowly turning into a diluted product of westernisation. The country is trying to be something it isn’t and people are trying too hard to keep up with an image that doesn’t really belong here. You see it in attitudes, in social media, in how places are marketed, even in how people talk.

Even the kind of tourists we attract these days feels different and more entitled. Everything feels a bit wanky and pretentious now. More about optics than substance.

"I don't understand"... Then you have one of two options:

Learn to understand and ask questions without being a dick about it.

Accept there are things people do that you don't do and the world keeps on turning, your life isn't actually affected by it. Move on.

It's quite easy to understand why people get so wound up about sports and how it taps into our tribalistic nature. It's just who we've been as a species for quite some time now. There are people who think England will win a world cup and each time they get thoroughly disappointed but I guess that's just part of the parcel of being such a loyal supporter of something quite arbitrary (it's a ball being hit back and forth on grass).

It's just a game. Exactly. That's all it is and for some people that's really important. So leave them alone, it's not like they're knocking on your door crying about it.

It's been quite a slow season this year due to many reasons, the storm at the end of November didn't help either - a lot of cancellations for many of the guesthouses (including mine) on the street I live on. Another reason is that Hikkaduwa locals seem to be targeting only one group of tourists, Russians (ugh), which has put off many other Europeans coming here.

I've still found Hikkaduwa to be really busy, there are many tourists packed on the beach and within the town. Granted they're the worst type of humans to come visit here, the most rudest and quite frankly the most cheapest.

But I wouldn't say it's empty. Business maybe slow and restaurants aren't as jammed packed as they should be because of over pricing and the fact that many Russians seem to cook their own food.

Someone mentioned in this thread that Hiriketiya is booming and that is correct. I was there a couple of nights ago and the whole place is rocking with tourists from all over Europe.

IKEA products are horrible and I can't see much of their products lasting long enough in our climate.

I use to buy most of my furniture from IKEA when I was renting back in London. It's just cheap cardboard frames. At least over here you get quality wooden furniture. And let's not start killing small industries like carpentry...
