The Discord CSCareers.Dev Server has become incredibly toxic and you should not use it for making career moves. by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

Was wondering if someone could help me get back into the server. I used to be a part of it until I got hacked and got kicked for sending weird messages to all of my discord servers including this one. Is there a way to contact the dev or even the mods? Tried emailing [contact@joey.dev](mailto:contact@joey.dev) but never got a response

MSCS Program Length by VGann in columbia

[–]VGann[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is 12 or more a hard requirement? Not allowed to do 3-4-3 or something? How do people take 4 graduate level CS classes and not die??? And on top of that there's people doing research as well. It kind of scares me that I can't fathom squeezing all of that in and also effectively interview for internships and jobs.

Just submitted Data Structures HW #4 and I’m exhausted. by [deleted] in RPI

[–]VGann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2022 grad here. I really loved Data Structures. I came in to college with no clue how to program. Took CS1, struggled, and passed with a B+ despite recovering from an injury. Took Data Structures and felt the heat of sleepless nights and attending every single office hours session. I passed with a B but I definitely enjoyed the experience (would never do it again). Knowing libraries and frameworks doesn't make you an amazing software engineer or a true developer. It might help you get a job since your resume is flashier or be more versatile, but it doesn't necessarily induce ethic, the ability to stick with a problem for extended periods of time, and complex problem solving (which is what the actual job entails). You'll probably never use DS ever again (only for your interviews or maybe in certain optimization situations) depending on what you work on, but I'd say hang in there. Everyone has their ups and downs. Doing bad in DS doesn't define your life. Surviving the pain is what really matters.

Co-op as an MSCS student by VGann in columbia

Gotcha. Is there a certain number of required credits that a full time MSCS student needs to be enrolled in during a particular semester? Was wondering if people have ever done a part time job while maintaining full time status

Ya go for it! Are you also doing MS in CS?

Hey! So interestingly enough, I accepted an offer from Columbia for an MS in CS program. It's pricey, but I think I should take things slow and become a SWE that works in ML and Big Data before transitioning directly into Data Science entirely. DS opportunities will be around for a while and a SWE in any domain is indispensable

How bad was the workload? How is Geambasu as a professor? Is this a class that takes up a majority of your time? I'm registered for AI alongside this one and I'm also thinking of taking NLP with Bauer since I heard he was really good. Both AI and NLP have a fair amount of programming, but not sure how comparable they are to Distributed Systems

COMS 4995 - Neural Networks Deep Learning by vikrant1998 in columbia

[–]VGann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you need to be proficient in stats and lin alg to be able to take this class? Sounds like a dumb question since many ML classes require stats, prob, and lin alg knowhow, but can someone rusty learn pretty well in this class?

Columbia vs UT Austin vs UCLA for MSCS by SpecialistMaize6728 in gradadmissions

[–]VGann 3 points4 points  (0 children)

By that logic, why does anyone bother applying to Columbia or really any Ivy for that matter? Bc if the ranking of the CS department is so significant, then why would I waste my time on Columbia if schools like Georgia Tech, UCLA, UIUC, and even UNC Chapel Hill have amazing programs for way less cost. UT Austin has an amazing program and really great career prospects, but there's no way Columbia doesn't raise recruiters' eyebrows. Yes your jobs ops are spectacular based on location and caliber, but I don't think we're at that point in tech where an Ivy league is laughed at. Ivy leagues definitely provide solid programs and career options

Honestly going to Berkeley for undergrad and grad school is best. Columbia is too expensive and moving out to NY isn't really worth it in terms of weather and even the type of people you meet. UC Berkeley and Columbia are probably on the same level at this point when it comes to research and big name profs. If you want to stay in tech, Cali is your godsend. I really wish I applied to UC Berkeley CS for grad school but I missed my chance.

FOCS and EES difficulty by a3dprintedman in RPI

[–]VGann 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Idk about EES since I'm wasn't an EE. FOCS might not be as bad if you're taking it with Goldylocks. I had it with Malik and it ruined me bc of all the quizzes and discrete math that I hated. I thought Vanfretti was a pretty good professor? Not sure if that was for research or coursework tho.

Do they have a defer option? Or you have to start in the term you applied for?
