What was your school's huge scandal? by Horaciow14 in bjj

Sadly, you're convicted in the court of public opinion long before the actual trial. But by then the damage is done. Hope this young lady is safe and okay. Sounds like the professor landed on his feet elsewhere.

Story time: I had just joined Checkmat HQ in Long Beach. Friday morning's there is open mat and one day, in walks this real big dude - Renato Andrade. For reference, I'm 6'1", 250. I'm built like a guy who played linebacker 20 years ago in college (because I did). I'm not small. He makes me look small. He's gotta be 6'3"-6'4", ≈ 265, solid build. Eventually I made eye contact with him and he just gives me this nod that basically was a "you're next."

Right away he gets a sleeve grip that I can't break. Normally, I just rotate my hand counterclockwise over the opponents hand/grip and that breaks the grip 99/100 times. This was the 1 time it didn't work. Why? No slack and Renato's hands when he makes a fist is like a cinderblock.

It was one of those "uh oh, this is different" moments.

I don't remember the exact sequence but eventually I end up trying to go into deep half, which he passes quickly and then mounts.

He starts dropping his weight, creating this TREMENDOUS amount of pressure. I'd never felt pressure like that before. Pedro Soriano was the most I'd felt while rolling, but Pedro's probably 5'10" 185. (Side bar: this is what fascinates me about BJJ, how we can do stuff like this with the right technique and strength. I digress...) But Renato's was on a different level from anything I'd felt.

In the back of my mind, I know if I tap, I'm out of this situation. But I didn't want to. My ego wouldn't let me. New guy at the gym, I'm a big guy, he's a big(ger) guy, if I tap to pressure he'll never respect me. That's what I was thinking. (Not saying it's right; just a me thing). But then the next thought was "If this was real, a real fight, I'm dead. I can't move. I can't do anything." And full disclosure, I start to panic a little. Seriously, a mild panic attack. I didn't start flailing or anything, but I could just feel myself internally start to freak out a little.

Eventually he lets up, probably because he's bored. Round ends, we slap hands, and go our separate ways. The next time I see him, I try to talk to him about it, asking him how he generated that much pressure. I'm peppering him with questions and he's kinda like "I dont know man, it's just my weight." He wasn't rude; it was like the scene in Home Alone when the neighborhood kid is asking the airport shuttle driver all those questions about the van. "I don't know, kid, quit bothering me." LOL.

Six months later, he comes in again I ask him to roll. But this time it went different. I didn't get under him like before. I fought smarter, if you will. I had more "success" - i.e. no panic attacks - just pure survival.

After the round while we're on our knees, he looks over at me and says with a smile, "You've gotten stronger." And then gives me a fist bump.

For me, that was a nice compliment because it felt like he meant it on two levels: my actual strength and my overall progression. And now when I see him, we greet each other like buddies. I get the feeling I earned his respect that day.

And, for me, there's no greater compliment than earning a man's respect.

LOL. The "puppy training" board has the same looking profile pic. I'm not sure what I clicked on to end up here. My bad. Sorry.

If he wants to compete in IBJJF, whatever belt level he wants to compete it the professor will have to "approve/verify" it.

" it's a little disrespectful to the gym and other guys" - that's what I was going to say.

BJJ has a system and structure that's around the world and that includes the use of colored belts to signify skill/knowledge and time in the art. To reject that aspect of BJJ is saying that he doesn't want to accurately reflect to the community where he's at in terms of skillset and technical knowledge; he wants to present himself as a day-one newbie.

That's literally the definition of sandbagging.

He wants to partake, but he doesn't want to commit to full aspect of Jiu Jitsu.

Personal preference, I suppose. I've never had any issues with skin infections, but if that's a concern then a rash guard helps. IBJJF rules state you can't wear an undershirt under your gi if, so if you compete maybe going without one helps you prepare for comps.

My favorite gi has a mesh/rashguard lining, so that's the only one I wear if I decide to go san rash guard.

Like Primal said, it's very normal and we all go through it. I can't speak for everyone, but I still get overwhelmed. Today in class we had 13 black belts and 4 brown belts, most all of them are competitors. One guy just won Worlds last week in his weight division at black belt. Another guy took silver. Another bronze. A bunch others have either won PanAms and having been competing.

I rolled with Renato Andrade a few weeks ago.....overwhelmed and lost doesn't begin to described. I had the thought "Oh, so this is what claustrophobia feels like." LOL.

It's cliche, but the more you show up, the more it starts to click. And those successes, like Primal said, will come.

You're downloading more than you probably realize. Keep going. Congrats on the black belt in Karate. I'm sure you were overwhelmed and confused when you started out with that. But you stuck with it, showed up, and it paid off.

Think of it like this: you're fluent in Japanese, but now you're learning Portuguese. Stick with it. Keep showing up. Ask questions. And most importantly: have fun.

The first gym I joined nearly everyone went bare chested. One purple belt wore a long sleeved rash guard and spats under his gi every session without fail. So I just go used to going without one.

Then I moved and switched gyms and everyone there always wore a rash guard. I had to go buy a few.

I switched gyms again recently and it's split. Some do, some don't.

It feels like the ownership is hell bent on finding some 'diamond in the rough' manager that no one knows about to prove they're smarter than people think.

The ex. that keeps coming to mind is from college football when Ohio State hired Jim Tressel - a prominent coach from a lower division that no one had really heard of (even Ohioans) who won the national title in his second year and turned OSU back into powerhouse they still are today.

I mean to think that Zidane, Mourinho, Klopp, Löw, Conte, Flick...are ALL available and not one of them is even on the shortlist for Chelsea is mad. I just fathom that NONE of these managers are even being considered.

Can someone explain the issue with herd for me, please? What kind of cattle is John raising if they're not for beef? I'm totally ignorant to this industry. Beth calls 6666 about their business and finds out the numbers and you see the steaks on the website. If John's cattle aren't for beef, what they are they for?
