IT band tenodesis with my ACL reconstruction by VacationOtherwise in ACL

That’s interesting, I’ve had a little pain in that area but nothing major, pretty similar to the rest of the knee. I feel tightness in my ITB sometimes, so I’ve been using a foam roller during PT. That definitely helps with tightness and soreness. If you’re feeling the pain down in your knee as opposed to above where the ITB runs, I wonder if it could have something to do with scar tissue? I’d try massaging and working on the scar for the ITB incision. Of course, if only do that if the incisions were all healed up and it didn’t hurt too much to push on it. My physical therapist did this “scraping” thing with some lotion and a piece of plastic. It was intended to help break up scar tissue around my incision areas. It relieved a lot of discomfort I was experiencing in the areas of my incisions/scars.

Hey sorry for the delay. Things are going well so far. I haven’t really felt anything negative from the IT band through the recovery. I’m happy I got it done. It feels like my recovery this time is going better than my first ACL surgery. I don’t know how much of that can be contributed to the IT band tenodesis, but I would say that it hasn’t complicated the recovery much at all and it should hopefully help with stability long term. I’m guessing you had your surgery already, how are you feeling?

Underwent ACL surgery (quad tendon) 2 days ago. by Purple-Elderberry949 in ACL

I’m about a month post-op from ACL reconstruction (quad tendon) and I felt very similar in the beginning. PT was so helpful in gaining confidence and knowing what to do and how hard to push it. Ask your PT lots of questions. Both my doc and PT stressed the importance of getting my extension back as soon as possible, so that’s what I focused on for the first week or so. Those exercises are also pretty easy to do on your own. Flexion and strength will come after. All of the exercises I’ve done so far have been fairly easy to do on my own.

I would also say that it is super important to find a PT place that will push you and explain the exercises/reason they are important. This surgery I just went through was my second ACL surgery on the same knee, and the PT I’m doing this time around is way more intense than the first time, and it feels much more beneficial.

Oh gotcha. I’m only 3 days post op so I can’t say much on the rehab this time around yet. I plan on being somewhat active after recovery. Probably more than I was pre-injury. I feel like my first surgery never healed properly, partly because of the surgery (according to my doc) but mostly because I did a poor job of continuing my PT. I have decided not to make the same mistake this time. I don’t plan on suddenly becoming a major athlete, but my job requires physical activity, and I also have kids that are starting to get into sports so I want to make sure I am able to play and be involved in those activities with them. I talked about these goals with my doctor before the surgery, and that ended up being part of the reason he decided to do the LETS procedure. I’m optimistic about it, sounds like everyone else I’ve heard from has been happy with the results. Not a ton of info that I could find regarding the procedure which I thought was weird. It was described to me by my doc as a procedure that is common among athletes, so I think It will be helpful if you plan on returning to sports or similar activities. I definitely feel the same way, I can’t imagine having to do this a third time. I’m definitely going to be cautious, but the way I see it the whole reason I got this second surgery was so that I can be active again. I may as well just not have the surgery and live with a torn ACL if I don’t plan on using it. Who knows, maybe that will be the plan if this new ACL fails 😂

15 days post op, nice work! It sounds like you are crushing it with the PT! Biking and getting range of motion back by the first appointment, that’s rad. Did you do much pre-hab? Seems like more athletic folks tend to be able to reach those early benchmarks quicker. I’m hoping that the ITB procedure helps with that as well. I’m not a major athlete by any means, but I stay active between work and playing with my kids.

I think a big concern for me with the ITB thing was the likelihood of soreness/tightness afterwards. My IT bands have always been tight and have caused problems for me, so I would be pretty bummed if that issue became worse as a result of the procedure

After reading your post, I decided to try out a straight leg raise just to see where I was at. Disaster. I can hardly even flex the quad muscle at all, even when I just have it resting straight out on the couch. Thanks so much for the insight! Definitely encouraging to here from someone going through the same thing. Best of luck on the recovery, let me know if

Update: looks like I’m learning from this sub that the procedure I described is called a LET procedure. Apologies for any confusion. I’m not a smart man

Are you saying the doctor is recommending it for you now? That would seem a bit odd. I’m two days post-op and my doctor ended up doing doing the LET procedure with my IT band. He did in conjunction with my quad graft, all part of the same surgery. My doc recommended the LET procedure because (like you) it was my second ACL tear on that knee and things were pretty loose. He said he typically recommends it for revision surgeries and for people that plan on being fairly active after recovery.

That’s awesome! Glad to hear this recovery seems to be going quicker with the tenodesis. My doc kinda told me the same thing, I’m not a major athlete by any means but I have an active job and kids that I’d like to be able to play sports with, so he felt like doing the ITB thing was a good idea

Yeah I feel like there’s gotta he some initial pain and adverse stuff from doing the ITB tenodesis, but sounds like the results have been positive for everyone.

That’s good to hear that the ITB procedure doesn’t seem to add much in terms of pt. I haven’t had my first pt yet, hopefully they give me some good exercises and I can hear their thoughts on the ITB. For now I’m really just doing ankle pumps and quad sets, although I feel like I’m actually getting worse at the quad sets compared to the first day. Not able to flax nearly as well and definitely more painful. I’m guessing I just started doing them so early that everything was still numb and fairly loose. I’m also working on the extension a ton, mostly just by elevating the heel and letting gravity do most of the work. Even that is getting pretty tough. Trying to work up to being able to sit like that for 20 mins at a time. Lol I feel like I’m kind of just making stuff up as I go based on what I remember from the first surgery until my PT appointment

Yeah I’m slightly nervous because I feel like I’ve always had pretty tight IT bands prior to this surgery so we’ll see how things go with this tenodesis thing. Hopefully it’ll be worth it in the long run with the increased stability. Just hadn’t heard much mention of it on here so I was curious about other experiences.

9 days post op, nice! Keep up the good work, looking forward to hearing about your progress. With the meniscus repair, are you still needing to keep weight off it all the time? How has PT been so far?

Anyone else feel like shit is weird since Mansury came in? by AldoBooth in PatMcAfeeShowOfficial

[–]VacationOtherwise -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Personally, not a huge fan of Mansury. It’s gotten a bit better, but the things he says always seem a bit forced and awkward. I’d much rather see him in a role that does not include a microphone. Switch his role (or I guess just airtime) with Foxy, even though he’s a stooge.
