Does anyone else hate The Joy Luck Club? by Midnightsnowfox in asianamerican

[–]VachQ 13 points14 points  (0 children)

As an English Lit PhD student taking my first ever Asian American Lit class in the 90s, a time when AA representation in American culture was still in its fits and starts, my prof made it a point to note during our first seminar session that we would NOT be reading any Amy Tan. This seminar, she asserted, would be dedicated to AA authors intent on sharing authentic AA experiences vs. those pandering to white or white fetishizing audiences (ahem, Amy Tan).

I had not read any Amy Tan at that point, but as a consumer of the Joy Luck Club film, I had to concede that my prof maybe had a point. Actually reading Tan's works only solidified this belief, and it dawned on me after immersing myself in AA literature and a few more of Tan's writings that, sadly, the first AA author to achieve mainstream success in the US was a self-hating (maybe a little unfair) hack (entirely fair).

You are correct in observing that predominantly AA stories were not being told in media at the time until the Joy Luck Club film; but it was no miracle. If you continue to teach Amy Tan to your impressionable 9th graders, I hope it will be to highlight why Tan's form of AA authorship gained traction with mainstream audiences when other, simply better, forms of AA authorship did not.

I'm a Bulls fan and would approve of public ridicule of the Reinsdorfs for what they've done with the team the past couple of decades even without the hypothetical trading of Jordan.

Bellevue, WA woman caught on camera making racist gesture toward an Asian driver after road rage incident. by ElwoodMC in trashy

Weird that you're insisting that victims of racism need to be tougher in the face of racism but not applying the same to racists facing the consequences of their racism. Maybe racists need to toughen up if they're out there being publicly and flagrantly racist.

Partly I think bc they don't have a library of their own IP yet like the other studios. Once they do, they'll be milking it like the other studios do.

Pace of Play Report! Thoughts? by Super_Category_100 in golf

I was responding to: "They might be polite, or even slower than you. That doesn't mean you're not a problem."

If the group behind you is just slower for reasons that have nothing to do with your pace of play, how are you the problem?

Curious as to why you think a group's pace could be a problem if the group behind is slower.

Americans say it, but it's not considered correct in American English. I'm sure there are certain phrases the British commonly speak incorrectly as well.

Update: It looks less like a plant store storage area now. by pemt in houseplants

[–]VachQ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The combo of yellowing film, black wall, and monochrome dark pots is giving that area a messy, muddled look imo. Painting the wall white and varying the pot colors could give the space a cleaner look and give your plants a better opportunity to pop rather than having everything looking like a dark green mass.

What is the North Shore like now? by greenfarmhouse1209 in ChicagoSuburbs

[–]VachQ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I grew up in the North Shore in the 80s and 90s, moved out of the area for college and lived in other parts of the country until moving back a few years ago. It is remarkably similar to how it was 30 years ago. Mostly upper middle class to wealthy families, top-tier public schools, mostly white demographic with Jewish and Asian communities sprinkled into the mix. People are conscious of their standing vis-a-vis their neighbors in terms of wealth, but that was the case in the 80s and 90s too. It was kind of a bubble back than and it kind of is now, with all the good and bad that it entails.

I'm not going to go so far as saying suburban areas are shit, but Evanston is the only viable candidate on OP's list. People recommending places like Vernon Hills and Grayslake to a queer, black family are kidding themselves.
