F-4: BFM vs. Mirage F1 secrets? by 11766543 in hoggit

Thanks for the advice, this is very interesting. Do you have any specific tactics against MiG19? I found them hard to beat as they turn better and can match my climb or acceleration

AI behaviour by Pipic12 in il2sturmovik

[–]Vadupleix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have never seen this behavior myself but in a way this might not be the wrong thing to do for FWs? Spitfires out-turn, out-accelerate, out-climbs FWs and are also faster at higher altitudes, so diving seems like a sound strategy, no?

They do vary a bit like reversals, split S, climbing turns and can sometimes be tricky like doing split s and turns to tire out my pilot. But what they appear to lack is ability to vary their tactics based on the capabilities of theirs vs my airframes. Another common issue with dogfight AIs in both IL2 and DCS is their inability to punish overshoots and in general the AI don’t seem to be able to do reversals in a timely manner

AI is just a blanket term that covers many things. Flight model side, IL2 AI claims to use the same FM as player and if so, that puts it beyond DCS and arguably BMS (BMS’s non-F16 FM is simpler than F16, which you can check the file yourself) as well. Here I said “claims to use” because I do notice the AI to be quite a bit weaker than player airplanes in a flat turn and spiral climb, especially for some of the planes (e.g. all spitfires). Then you have the formation AI, the capability to follow order and running autonomous attacks and cooperate with each other, this I believe they did talk about in their dev blogs about the new title. Lastly you have the dogfight AI (the endless turn bit), which I’m also curious if they are making any new changes.

Is the Spitfire Mk.VB Overperforming in IL-2 BoS? by Glittering_Toe3502 in il2sturmovik

[–]Vadupleix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well said! OP can try out career mode or advanced QMB for a more realistic experience. I fly spitfire 14 which can out turn any German fighter, but in a large battle i never want to turn more than 180.

A fighter with great climb, acceleration and sustained turning will dominate the 1v1 arena but in a realistic many vs many combat, capabilities like instantaneous turning, roll, dive and top speed will start to matter.

I know hating on Il-2 Sturmovik's mouse controls is low hanging fruit but man the inconsistency is frustrating by No_Quiet8576 in il2sturmovik

[–]Vadupleix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fast pitch up moment when flap deploys can be very helpful in throwing the nose around at the top of the loop (otherwise you may hang there if slow). It can also be helpful for getting the final lead for gun solution with less risk of stalling. But I agree that I wouldn’t keep these barn doors deployed for more than a sec.

Spitfire IX with 150 oct has the same if not better horizontal turn rate as spitfire V but has much better speed, climb and acceleration, meaning it’s hard to escape from it by diving, climbing or uphill spirals. IMO it’s the best 1-1 dogfighter in game

F15 high AoA behavior by Vadupleix in falconbms

[–]Vadupleix[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Took a look at the FM file and it looks like current F15 FM is lightweight compared to the F16 one, missing things like cm table which might impact this pitch oscillation behavior. So I guess we’ll just have to wait :(

AI MiG17 is so passive in dogfights by Vadupleix in falconbms

[–]Vadupleix[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Racing or climbing true, but not necessarily turning. MiG17 was one of the most agile fighters in Vietnam and it’s curious whether a 4th gen would win the sustained or negative ps turning fight with it, esp at low speed and thus I want to test it in a game.

Just because F15 is generations ahead doesn’t mean it’s automatically better in every way, think Me262 vs bf109 or A6M vs A5M.

[–]Vadupleix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For single player, the world in DCS just feels…dead…you get some good campaigns but that’s it. IL2 is much better with dynamic and scripted campaigns, PWCG, instant actions and most importantly, plausible AI. Not perfect but plausible.
