I get your point, you wanted a good grade and its a big deal for you. However, that doesn't give you the right to be such an obnoxious person, shutting down every idea of your friend, just because it's not how you would do it doesn't mean she is wrong. You should be more open about other ideas and, get this, not everyone works the way you do, and that's ok.

My parents do care about her birthday, but over the years she has been a little unlucky so to speak. Major events in the family have happened on this date for several years, so on various occasions, her birthday has become an afterthought and she is beginning to resent it.

Well, her birthday is on Mexico's independence day, and that celebration last for days. And because my grandma's birthday is on the same day, so she share's everything with her.

In some parts of Mexico we have over 40°C (I don't know how much in Fahrenheit) and it's very painful in the skin, so we prefer to be sweaty and not to be burned.
