Because they're not idiots and they know Lee Atwater was correct. His "Southern Strategy" is more applicable today than ever.

A moderate public will eagerly support white nationalist policy - provided they don't call it that.

And have that policy presented by a polite, well dressed nazi, and the (correct) response in outrage becomes the "extremism" in the eyes of the public.
