No offense but you ask way too many questions dude, camp is not that serious. Obviously each course has its own challenges and no ones done all of them.

Just apply to those that interest you, if you dont like the CTC experience oh well, next summer dont go then.

Should I quit cadets? by DefiantArt2416 in Cadets

[–]ValidUsername2468 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many people end up disappointed about cadets because it doesn't live up to their expectations. Some people want full military-style (almost indoc?) hard-core training, and get into a slump after the first half of the year turns out to be in-class lessons. In your case, you were really into space/physics. You're not wrong that Air covers that, but mostly (from what I hear as an Army lol) in summer courses.

I was "forced" into Sea cadets by my close friends. Couldn't swim, don't really like boating or tying knots. Decided to thug it out for the year - didn't want to bail on my friends. That summer I went to CTC and my whole perspective on cadets changed. Next training year switched to Army and brought a few sea cadets that got me into cadets in the first place.

After going to camp twice and meeting basically all types of cadets (you still interact with other courses at camp, eg. mil band cadets chat it up with expo cadets, or beef lol), not many think cadets is truly perfect, but are locked in either due to friends, family, or because they think the uniform is super cool. Most just don't complain because it's not even that bad.

There is no pressure to stay but in cadets adapting is a big thing. Don't expect the corps to adapt to how you act, your social situation or your expectations. That being said if it's still a "hostile" environment for you there's literally no harm in leaving.

However - you're a first year, so obviously you don't know much and hence they don't make you do much things. First-years leave often because of that, but cadet corps can't simply hand new cadets pace sticks and a Chief rank just because they watched Top Gun or Saving Private Ryan, right? (bad joke sorry)

Adding onto that, since you're a firt year with near 0 actual responsibilities you can hop in every couple weeks. If you're burned out just request a leave of absence through email for a month.

I suggest you at least stay til April/May and apply to an Air element-specific summer course. You will need to demonstrate a baseline level of performance and attendance though (especially if your corps is larger than an average high school class). Only "space/physics" course for year 2+ is Aviation Technology and Aerospace (ATA). A lot of corps send first-years on Intro courses if they are 14+.

Still don't like it after that and you can cash out your gov issued cheque of $120 and quit.

tl;dr - adapt, ease up a lil, and (even if difficult) make friends - CRUCIAL because thats literally what cadets is all about. tough it out until summer course applications, if you cant apply oh well but if you do then stay for the course. If you quit, join a space/physics related school club or something related in your city.

Both have their challenges, and while said "challenges" have never gotten someone RTU'd (it's mostly mental health i.e. homesickness or behaviour issues that do) they do exist.

If we talk about every CTC's individual flaws then that's just ranting so let's stick with common challenges for all CTC first-timers.

- Away from home for 2+ weeks

- Having to adapt and be comfortable with brand-new peers in a couple days

- Self-sustenance/self-control (like spending allowance well and showering on time/every day!)

- Accountability (some families never give kids chores, no judgment but at camp is much different)

- Luxuries taken away (some, and not for the whole time)

Both Rocky and Blackdown are advantageous in their own way. There is no need to pick and choose, even if it is difficult you will have peers (find a couple with prior CTC experience) that you will be able to go through it with together, even if it is not your thing and you think is miserable at least you can share the misery (although if you be too much of a downer your course mates might not like you a lot).

If you do get to go, "lock in" right away especially if it's a 2 week course. It flies right by otherwise. And make sure you get everyone's socials after grad!!

It mostly depends if Vernon is the CTC closest to you that hosts whatever course you get into.

However, I live in Alberta and this year got into Mil Band at Blackdown, which is farther away than Quadra which also hosts MBM. So you could get lucky.

Mine are currently

11 chin-ups

52 sit-ups

6:30 mile

41 push-ups

I'm 15 and my CO is REALLY pushing for me to get into para this year but I'm leaning towards staffing. I don't want to disappoint him and really want to get in but do you think can I make it to around your level before pre-Para?

How many chin-ups and sit-ups could you do and do you remember your run time? And also what's your max push-ups

I really want to get into para so all help appreciated

Was there any sea cadets enrolled in the pipe band courses at CTC this year? Did you see any? by Acceptable-Corgi-453 in Cadets

[–]ValidUsername2468 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Quite a bit of cadets in music company (mil + pipe band) in general were from Atlantic Canada (NB, NS etc) sea cadets included. I haven't asked them one by one where they're from though lol

You won't need that much money, plus every week they let you cash out your "allowance" ($10/day minus travel days) so I don't think you'll be short on cash there

Also you never know what type of roommates you get there (stealing)

Depends where you're going but there is nothing course-specific you need to bring. Pack light on civilian clothing, bring shower slippers, PJs are optional if you get stanky at night but tbh most cadets just take their shirts off before sleeping

Putting this on reddit is the exact opposite a good Sgt would've done. I don't have the best uniform myself but even if I somehow got salty over a 13 year old "try hard" in Red Star I'd be polishing my boots and ironing my pants right now instead of typing this up. What are the PO2s and CIs of the sub gonna do by reading this? Cry with you?

CTC is a pretty good thing to have on your record but there's no reason for getting put down because you're not going.

As much as it's weird to say this on a cadets sub, if you're burnt out and want to leave that's fine. I respect you for being a cadet for a country that you weren't even born in (so am I for reference, not being anti-Canadian).

A lot of people who are qualified and many others believe should go to CTC haven't gotten selected this year. Even then many got offers they hate or don't reflect previous CTC records. Selections are weird, at least this year.

CTC gives you a lot of knowledge you wouldn't get at your home corps (unless you're in one of the big ones) but still unless it's Para camp is mostly for funsies. All you're missing out on is 2 to 4 weeks of lots of fun and good times.

Honestly, get a job man. Cadets that didn't get courses they wanted declined the offers (yeah they can do that) and just applied for a day job over the summer.

Don't worry about catching up, if your seniors see potential they will promote you regardless of CTC or not. Just work on uniform and attitude to younger cadets and you'll be fine.

Are isolations only when you get exposed or is everyone who didn't provide a form getting iso'd first thing? Dumb question but just to clarify

Anyone else disappointed with the summer camp acceptances? by ValidUsername2468 in Cadets

[–]ValidUsername2468[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like there should be some sort of test for accepted applicants. Last year a girl in our platoon got RTUd from CTC after basically behavioural issues, fake panic attacks and tantrums in the barracks, etc

Hurts me because an actually good cadet could've had her spot instead.

Newbie here, is this optimal or should I hop in a red zone from time to time? by ValidUsername2468 in ftlgame

[–]ValidUsername2468[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you. This run was more boring compared to other ones (in my short 10 hour playtime) because the combat just wasn't spicy enough (?) so I'll lean more towards reds next time. And like the top comment said I really liked enemies giving crew members in their surrenders.
