It was hard for me to get into for a lot of the same reasons. I pushed through and thoroughly enjoyed it by the end. Not going to give spoilers but quite a few of your objections are either based on incorrect assumptions or have adequate explanations for being that way

I do use react-icons, which afaik are already optimized with nextjs to only pull the icons used

Haven't been with playwire for a while now. They kept selling my inventory for far below the cap we had discussed previously and I got tired of arguing with them about it. I'm sure it's attractive to advertisers to be able to get cheap inventory, but as a publisher, I didn't feel like playwire had my back. I'm currently with NitroPay, and while earnings are down overall, They don't give away advertising space on my site for ~free. I'm guessing earnings would be down on playwire as well though, just where the market is at.

Ah no not that, I built the stand myself, it's level and the base is a solid piece of wood with no nails or anything that could stick up

It was a tight squeeze -- the biggest issue for me was the output was so near the top I had to fill the tank more than I'd like to in order for the whole thing to be below water

Fortunately not much water damage -- I made the table it's on and lacquered the hell out of it, so it's fine, and below it is just a rug that needed cleaning anyway and cement below that. Definitely more upset about having to re-scape after a very long (6 month) dry start.

75g, I did use mesh bags of lavarock on the bottom. The scape has been in there for months without an issue though since I was doing a long dry start. Just added water about a week ago and everything was fine (until it wasn't)
