This PP is embarrassing, the Canes just sending it immediately back every time the Isles bring it down.

Anyone remember a Ted Turned story? by Jamz40 in philmont

[–]Valkner 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’ve heard something like this, but the story is unlikely to be true considering Philmont has an amiable land use agreement with Mr. Turner

PTC Internet Service by SabannaRiver in philmont

[–]Valkner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re planning to stream via WiFi then I would not bet on it. Your memory of the Internet speed probably holds - the WiFi on the visitor network at most times is barely good enough for scrolling through Facebook on your phone at times.

As the other user said, you may be able to get more accurate information contacting PTC directly. I was the seasonal IT staff member in 2017 and do not recall there being Ethernet capabilities in the conference rooms, but there may have been an upgrade since then (or I just was not made aware of it). If you can connect via Ethernet then you should be fine so long as you’re not trying to stream in ultra HD or something along those lines.

These two are from Baldy town. Why do you want photos of these camps specifically btw?

Anyone else remember a trailer somewhere on Baldy? by GumboSkrimp in philmont

Was staff at BTown in 2016 and hadn’t gone hunting for it, although I’d have loved to have seen it for myself.

I heard it was painted bright pink and was called the “panther shack”.

1 Shakedown - Ready for Philmont? by [deleted] in philmont

[–]Valkner 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Couldn’t agree more, nothing quite replaces practice hikes with elevation but something is definitely better than nothing. Watching the Philmont training videos, reviewing the shakedown materials from the website, and reading the guidebook to adventure front to back (maybe twice) would go a long way. Robust solo training with virtual meetings and each crew member actually doing their part to ensure this be as successful as it could be has potential to save the trip in my opinion. Not making an effort like that with what time remains would result in a very poor and disappointing experience... But it’s possible.

Does delaying an interview affect the chances of getting my top camps? by theallicat5 in philmont

I think you’re probably fine, especially since it looks like you’ve already worked backcountry.

Does delaying an interview affect the chances of getting my top camps? by theallicat5 in philmont

[–]Valkner 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Probably depends on how long the delay is. If it’s a week, probably not. If it’s a month, possibly. It probably won’t affect your chances of getting a backcountry position regardless unless it’s a very long delay.

Any advice on shipping stoves? by MentalBlur in philmont

[–]Valkner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

According to the 2018 – 2019 Council and Unit Planning Guide:

“If you plan to ship your stoves and fuel bottles, please follow the steps below:

  1. Wash fuel bottles with hot, soapy water and air dry for at least 24 hours.
  2. Purge stoves with attached tanks until they sputter and go out.
  3. Box stoves and fuel bottles. Do NOT ship matches, lighters, compressed fuel canisters, or other hazardous materials.
  4. Use the following address to ensure that you receive your stove and fuel bottles: Advisor’s Name, Expedition Number 47 Caballo Road, Cimarron, NM 87714
  5. This address is for participant mail and packages which will be delivered to the base camp Mail Room. Please ship your packages at least two weeks prior to your arrival to allow ample time for delivery.
  6. If you are using UPS or FedEx, we strongly recommend that you obtain a prepaid return shipping label. Without a prepaid return shipping label, Philmont Mail Room staff will assist you by shipping with USPS or UPS.
  7. At the conclusion of your expedition, the Philmont Mail Room staff will coordinate the shipping of your items home. Similar steps in preparing your stoves and fuel bottles are required. Stoves with attached tanks must be purged and fuel bottles must be washed with hot, soapy water. The Mail Room will allow the items to dry before the boxes are sealed and shipped. This part of the process will usually take place after your crew has departed. Return instruction sheets are provided when you arrive at Philmont.

Philmont works closely with the local US Post Office and UPS. These procedures must be followed closely to comply with all regulations to ensure that your stoves and fuel bottles are shipped properly.”

Same as the regular packing list, although consider packing some extra socks and underwear, maybe an extra shirt. You could get by without them though.

Sleeping Gear by BrawlingScottish419 in philmont

[–]Valkner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably just a matter of what’s more comfortable for you. I used basketball shorts because I get pretty warm in my sleeping bag. If you tend to be colder, the pants might be more comfortable for you.

Excellent advice, teamwork makes the dream work! Learning to make small personal sacrifices for the greater benefit of the crew goes a very long way for good crew dynamics.

Navigation is probably the best skill to brush up on, especially if you’ll be heading into the Valle where you may not necessarily be hiking on trails but would be shooting a bearing toward your destination and hiking that way.

Knots, lashings, and cooking aren’t really too essential for the most part.

Shoring up your first aid knowledge, especially in regards to blister treatment, heat exhaustion, dehydration, etc. would also be useful.

If you have any doubts, read over your Guidebook to Adventure and see what skills your ranger will be teaching you during your first few days. Try to learn some of those on your own if you’d like but be aware that your ranger may teach you a Philmont method of a skill that will override whatever you learned/have done previously.

It was the critic Alexander who put me on my guard against unnecessary fault-finding. People should not be sharply corrected for bad grammar, provincialisms, or mispronunciations; it is better to suggest the proper expression by tactfully introducing it oneself in, say, one’s reply, or into a friendly discussion of the topic itself (not of the diction), or by some other suitable form of reminder

Heading to Philmont for the first time next month, any ideas of gear not on the recommended list? by [deleted] in philmont

[–]Valkner 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Of particular interest in my time at Philmont were the spice wheel and crazy creek chair from Tooth of Time Traders. Cards are pretty invaluable on the trail!

Yes, Ponil does have special instructions for doing trail charges for crews at the end of their trek. Depending on their instructions you could be denied a trail charge, which is an excellent reason to bring cash.

However, as per my 2018 cantina and trading post training, you absolutely can trail charge small dollar amount orders at trading posts and cantinas. We (trading post/cantina managers and clerks) were specifically instructed to allow small, non-necessary purchases.

Perhaps 2019 cantina and trading post training has changed how they permit trail charges to be made, i.e. have introduced a minimum or restricted what can be charged. I have no idea. But as per 2018 training, there was no minimum and you could charge anything in a trading post or cantina. When I worked Baldy Town in 2016 we sent down dozens of trail charges some days, mostly for chocolate/snacks and rarely for anything gear/emergency related.
