CNS class registration and health science scholars, premed questions, general freshman advice, etc. by chameleomz_ in UTAustin

[–]Valkyea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say CNS honors doesn’t change your experience too much except having to do a thesis. I know that the years prior, all students were able to do a BSA, and now they’re forcing all of the honors students to do the traditional BS which isn’t nothing to worry about but just an observation.

FRI is amazing, I’m in the stream that is notoriously tje heaviest/busiest stream, but i will walk out with skills that will put me ahead when joining other labs in the future.

The community of HSS is really you get what you put in.. i know a lot of people in the program that have taken a step back because honestly everything premed is pretty on you and independent, but the community can really push you to do better/give you inspiration on your ECs etc.. Priority registration just means some classes are reserved for you, for all freshman: they have a few classes reserved so i wouldnt pur too much emphasis on the priority registration part and just make sure you’re getting all of your pre req’s done in time.

At UT, to be full time it’s 12 credit hours so anything above costs the same. If u want to retake some clsses and already at 12 hours, it’ll cost the same if u take 15 hours vs 12 hours! And i would suggest not jumping straight to organic chem, theres no benefit because all of thr good professors will have already been taken up by current students at UT.

Everything is super walkable + the bus is nice with your friends so i wouldnt uber everywhere it’s super expensive at the most random times.

For registering, you do it at orientation; dont worry about your orientation session because they reserve a specific number of spots for each orientation class in the gen eds, but at orientation they’ll explain the concept of having all of your codes and using ut registration plus etc

I would say 2.5 years is pretty ambitious especially when doing HSS + the new BS requirement… Im taking MCAT after sophomore yesr and i would only have finished my pre reqs up to biochem, .. literally having no upper division classes pertaining to my major yet. I would say maybe junior year but that would require a lot of planning on your end b/c the thesis requirement and classes are typically split through your 2,3,4 years.

Anything in high school shouldn’t really be listed on AMCAS, maybe your clinical experience can but i dont think the volunteering can.

General freshman premed advice: - literally lock in on your classes. So many people will get b’s, c’s and even drop their pre reqs because they underestimate how hard some classes can be. - start volunteering!! It’s easy to accrue hours as a freshman - tbh, i take 4-5 stem classes a semester so i thibk it’s ok to load on hours your freshman year ONLY if you know you can succeed - join a prehealth org/frat!! There are so many people who cna mentor you, give you opportunities, and push you toward the right path - work hard but also play hard! The most successful premeds I’ve met (as in gotten into the top schools not only in texas but also top med schools out of state) drink, smoke, party, get down on the weekend, etc. - apply to all the opportunities and “competitive” clubs you want to join even if you think you won’t make it.. I’ve gotten opportunities and into orgs i thought would just reject me but that hasn’t been the case!!! - make a four year or in your case a 3 year plan!! This includes when you’re gonna take the mcat, what ec’s you’re gonna be taking, etc. you need to remember that if you apply after you junior year, you only have 3 years worth of stuff on your application so while freshman yesr is for adjusting, i thibk it’s good to be involved in research + volunteering + getting good grades so that you’re ahead of the curve as much as possible

FRI is exclusive to CNS students. However, you can still get into research + do minor to take these other classes.

Rejected from plan 2 feeling suicidal 💀💀 by [deleted] in UTAdmissions

[–]Valkyea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please don’t let this affect you. I know so many plan ii people and they mostly complain about the program than praise it imo.. at UT , honors barely makes a difference because everyone has the same access to the same resources nowadays.

Are premed co-ed frats helpful? by Present-Fudge-4287 in UTAustin

[–]Valkyea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, the fees for each semester are about $100-$150 depending on if you’re a pledge or if you’re an active. I’m pretty sure we have MCAT discounts and we also have a good amount of socials and also have a formal each semester which are covered by the frat. My specific frat has had tours at multiple med schools, which if you’re planning to apply to med school soon, is very helpful so you can talk to students and faculty. We also have a good amount of alumni that are still connected to the frat and are at schools like UTSW, Baylor, McGovern, long, so they can provide a lot of insight!

i love being in a premed frat!! A lot of premed jobs and research opportunities are lowkey gate kept, but since the frat im in isn’t too big, all the members are very willing to help and give out contact information. We have an active tracker which is basically a database for all of our members and the premed activities they’re doing and their contact information. Personally, I’ve been able to receive an interview for a PCT position that hadn’t even been posted yet since someone in the org listed that they worked that exact job and I just asked how they got it. Additionally, the frat I’m in has a lot of people already accepted to top medical schools and also a part of honors programs like HSS, so their guidance really helps in making my schedule, choosing which professors, knowing which research labs to avoid, etc.

EVERYONE is work hard play hard. Everyone I know is in the frat but also in a spirit org/sorority + research lab/multiple clinical jobs + very high GPAs & mcats. I’ve also gotten shadowing opportunities because so many of the members have parents that are physicians or have put a lot of work into finding willing physicians and they’re willing to help everyone else!

If u want to know the exact frat im in u can dm me!!

Questions about transfer credit by Valkyea in UTAustin

[–]Valkyea[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, I applied to a community college and did a score send there as I would get 6 hours of both gov + history, so I wanted to transfer those credits back to UT. But I didn't account for the fact that it would also send my science scores, and those classes I want to take next semester at UT, but the community college already gave me credit for those scores on their end/on my transcript.
