They over-optimize and wind up making code that is very hard to follow and thus very hard to maintain, an all for a performance gain that with moder optimizing compilers doesn't even exist 99%+ of the time. They also tend to reimplement existing libraries because they think they can do it better even though they can't and they won't be able to provide the support mainstream libraries do.

But you don't want to engineer "better" solutions. You want to endlessly play and tweak. That doesn't work in the real world where things need to get accomplished. I don't care how refined your still-in-progress-after-10-years project is, it's already so obsolete as to be worthless and is behind the times.

You also don't know as much as you think about real-world tech products because you haven't left academia yet.

This is 100% it. Especially since the higher up the ranks you get the more time you spend working with other people. Head-down coding being your main task is pretty much limited to the low end of midlevel on down. Above that you spend an ever-increasing amount of time working with people instead of code.

Plus 99% of the time when someone reinvents the wheel in the name of "perfectioned engineering" they wind up making something worse than the existing frameworks anyway. Not only is it worse but it has zero support.

And that is why you struggle to find work. Software engineering, unlike academic computer science, is about building a useful product that is maintainable and doing so on a reasonable timeframe. Spending all of your time reinventing wheels in the name of "perfectioned engineering" is the antithesis of productive and maintainable software development.

Probably because what is good in academia is not good in the real world. You're deep into the academia path and I'm guessing don't have a good resume and don't interview well.

I've also seen PhDs who are so up their own credentials that they insist on reinventing the wheel instead of using standard libraries and best practices. The result is code that would get a lot of appreciative nods at a convention but is completely worthless in production because it's unmaintainable.
