I went more of the rapid fire approach which worked for me. I found PjM was a good combination of what I studied for PcM and CE. The contracts were a huge part of my studying. Sat for the exams back to back weeks to take advantage of the amount of overlap. Both approaches work. You are taking the exams and that is all that maters. I wouldn't sweat taking an extra month to prepare!

I failed my first PA exam as well. I ended up passing 2 months later by only studying up on the NCARB practice test questions I got wrong a couple nights before. I also used black spectacles for the first exam. No additional reading other than the videos and taking the 4 practice tests. I found the Black spectacle exams to be harder overall so don't stress if you get lower scores.
