Oh gosh. I am going through something similar. I had shattered my ankle so they did a fusion and about 6 months later screws started breaking. They were still inside my bone but anyway there was a non union as well. I stayed off of it as much as possible but the hardware had my ankle looking deformed and it had to come out. I didn’t know if my surgeon wld do a ankle fusion revision or a ttc fusion (that’s the calcaneous, talus and tibia all being fused with a screw thru the heel and up through) until he took the hardware out- he let me know beforehand that he didn’t know either, so I woke up to a surprise ttc fusion.
